Naseeruddin Shah crawled out of the gate with a string of self-important turds: Nishant, Bhumika, Junoon, Sparsh, Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Hai, Bazaar, Masoom, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Paar. One accidental hit (Masoom) and a pile of commercially stillborn pretensions.
That was enough for the Uni-Dimensional Actors Network (UDAN) to anoint him. Om Puri, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Farooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval, the Rainas, Pankaj Parashars, a closed circle of actors whose combined lifetime footfall could fit inside a single multiplex on a Tuesday. They awarded each other, wrote each other’s forewords, and spent decades congratulating themselves for refusing to do anything an audience actually wanted to watch.
Naseer swallowed the praise whole and decided he would be the first UDAN member to also make real money. He forced himself into the kind of films that required him to attempt laughter, anger, louder dialogue, action, romance, and basic human expressiveness. Sunayna, Police Public, Takkar, Agnichakra, and a straight-to-oblivion B-grade called Encounter: The Killing.
The numbers stayed dead. Hindi cinema, for all its sins, still preferred heroes who possessed a chin and eyes that didn’t look like they belonged on a startled amphibian. The face simply could not carry a commercial film. It could barely carry a close-up without the lighting and framing doing heavy damage control.
Whatever mainstream success he later touched was never his. In Tridev, Sunny Deol and Jackie Shroff reduced him to set dressing. Ajay Devgn erased him in Najaayaz. Sunil Shetty out-muscled and out-screened him in Mohra. Aamir Khan made him look like a supporting lecturer in Sarfarosh. He collected the paycheck, then slunk back to the UDAN reservation where mediocrity was treated as integrity and commercial failure was rebranded as artistic courage.
Now he is a bitter, irrelevant old man who spent his career being told he was profound by people whose own careers proved nothing of the sort. He resents Dilip Kumar for having a chin and actual stardom. He resents Amitabh for the same reason. He dismisses Rajesh Khanna as a non-actor while ignoring that Khanna caused mass hysteria for years. He despises the Khans, Devgn, Chakraborty, the Kapoors, and anyone else who managed to matter to the public he never reached. The hatred is not aesthetic. It is the resentment of a man who was repeatedly informed by ticket sales that he was not what the country wanted, and who has never forgiven the country for it.
In his final act he discovered political grandstanding. For the first time in his life he received real-time applause- retweets, headlines, the cheap dopamine of being called brave by people who already agreed with him. He labelled himself a “Dimagi Naxal,” urged revolt from the safety of his drawing room, and began presenting himself as the sole commercially viable product of the UDAN ecosystem. It is the last available stage for an actor who could never fill one.
Most people are mediocre. The difference is that Naseeruddin Shah was told, early and often, that he was exceptional, and he has spent the rest of his life refusing to notice the evidence that he was not. He will disappear with a handful of parallel-cinema footnotes and a late-life social-media tantrum. The new generation of UDAN descendants will write the same empty tributes. Everyone else will have already moved on. To Sona Spa maybe.

If an expression can be improved in post-production, why must it be perfect in front of the camera?
We refine almost every other part of a production.
Why should facial performance be the exception?
Funny how this is where we draw the line.

I think @narendramodi govt is losing the battle of perceptions particularly on @instagram. Every day hundreds of propaganda reels are being made against the govt that is being forcibly pushed on the timelines of everyone, even when you don’t follow the makers. The platform has clearly picked a side. And @AshwiniVaishnaw’s ministry seems to be either clueless about it, or the babus are compromised. @blsanthosh

In 2018, I visited Rohingya bastis in Jammu
An intelligence (IB) officer told me he had recorded 1,548 Rohingya families living in the region by then
I asked one Rohingya, 60-year-old Sayed Hussain, how he ended up in faraway Jammu after crossing the border in West Bengal. “I boarded the first train I saw [at Kolkata station]. It was noon. The journey ended at Jammu," he said
Hussain said he was among the first Rohingya to have settled in Jammu’s Bhatindi area 10 years earlier
Another Rohingya, 27-year-old Mohammed Tahir, also gave the same reason
Later, the IB officer laughed at this explanation. Told me, “By all accounts, they boarded the Sealdah Express that crosses Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab before reaching Jammu. It’s an arduous two-day journey. Why did they not get down at any of the stations in between?”
There is a syndicate active in Kolkata that has facilitated Rohingya migration to Jammu for years. They tell the Rohingya that the only Muslim-majority state in India is their "natural home"
Ironically, most settle in Hindu-majority Jammu and not Muslim-majority Kashmir. The officer showed me figures on how Rohingya are scattered over 42 sites across Jammu, meaning they are being settled all over the region, and many Army camps were now surrounded by them
In 2015, Abdur Rehman al Arkani, a Jihadi killed by security forces in south Kashmir, was from Rakhine from Myanmar. He went by pseudonym “Chota Burmi”
Role of several Rohingya men in helping Pakistani Jihadis trespass Jammu border had surfaced by then. They are considered experts in infiltration as they are deft in cutting the fence, know tunneling, and are skilled in camouflage. Plus, they have a victimhood narrative of being wronged by qafirs - the Buddhists of Myanmar
In Jammu's Bhatinda are I visited, it was a surprise how quickly they had flourished, as if being pampered and nurtured. An entire lane of shops was called "Burmi market". Most dry fruits factories were employing Rohingya women for cracking walnuts
Local Hindus told me how these infiltrators had bigger and better stocked shops than them, who had lived here for generations
The officer told me how using the UNHCR cards, which have no legal status or validity in India, Rohingya have obtained Aadhaar cards, ration cards and, in some cases, even permanent resident certificate (PRC) cards, all through fraudulent means
Eight years later, these Rohingya are all still there in Jammu. Apparently the govt is running an anti-encroachment drive these days asking them to clear the areas they have illegally occupied, and some of them have reportedly begun to leave
But the exercise is looking more like a temporary inconvenience for the infiltrators than a serious effort to clear Jammu and India of them.

The tech sector is undergoing a quiet but profound structural realignment.
#Microsoft’s voluntary exit program is not an isolated move. It mirrors a broader shift at firms including #Oracle, #Netflix, #AMEX, and major Indian IT services.
The core driver is the industry-wide pivot to #AI.
Companies are trimming overhead to fund the massive AI infrastructure buildout. Microsoft is guiding toward ~$175 billion in 2026 capex, with similar multi-hundred-billion-dollar commitments across hyperscalers. Workforce adjustments are the other side of that ledger. But is it sustainable? Using Opex savings to fund physical infrastructure may be short-term focused and structurally unsustainable in the long run if enterprise AI monetization lags.

India’s Muslims fear the demolition of a century-old mosque near PM Narendra Modi’s residence after the imam claimed he received an eviction notice.
There has been a wider demolition drive in the area, and the mosque’s water and electricity have been cut off.

The audience doesn’t know how many takes it took to get that scene right. They don’t know which expression happened on set. They only care about how the scene makes them feel.
So who are we preserving the process for?

You can use AI to change an actor's expression but apparently it makes people uncomfortable.
Yet endless retakes, exhausting actors, and burning production budgets are perfectly acceptable?
Maybe the real question isn't about technology.
It's about if we are willing to accept change for the better good.

This video is currently all over social media. Many are expressing sorrow for this woman and sadness at her outrage. My take on it is different. The look you see on her face is not outrage…it’s realisation. It is the look of a white, liberal lefty woman suddenly realising that her entire worldview is/was totally wrong. That what she had spent her life arrogantly portraying as her higher morality and understanding was in fact “suicidal empathy” as described by @GadSaad and that empathy was going to destroy her entire society.
