Here's my quick view on @taiwanplusnews about Joshua Wong's sentence: It's rubbing salt on the wounds of Hong Kong's already fractured society.
Watch at: taiwanplus.com/news/world-ne…
From @thewitnesshk: @joshuawongcf has been sentenced to another 10 years for his Hong Kong pro-democracy advocacy BEFORE the Beijing-imposed National Security Law took place.
The Hong Kong authorities got what they wanted: To keep him behind the bars as long as they can.
It rubs salt on the wounds of the movement, and the world will remain to see HK has never been the same because of this.
That's it? Almost a year after the devastating fire that claimed 168 lives in Hong Kong, John Lee led his cabinet to apologise, and Housing Secretary Winnie Ho resigned.
Too little, too late.
Survivors are essentially being forced to sell their homes, and the government has refused to rebuild the affected blocks on the same site or nearby.
Today's announcement comes five months before the next CE election. Which raises the question: Will Beijing keep John Lee for a second term?
The pro-democracy camp raised concerns over bid rigging in housing renovation projects for over a decade. With tens of thousands of homeowners ripped off (and the pro-democracy camp now vanished), the government has finally pledged to support homeowners and coordinate investigative powers to tackle bid rigging.
They could have done this ages ago, but didn't. Now, it has cost 186 lives and displaced over 4,600 people.
John Lee may look like he is taking action to secure his top job, but it is ultimately up to Beijing to decide. Sadly, the people of Hong Kong will never be able to hold him accountable.

Is John Lee following in Tung Chee-Hwa's footsteps by repeating similar missteps?
Tung pledged to make Hong Kong a "port" for various things, yet nothing materialised.

Hong Kong SAR's first Chief Executive is passed away. He'll probably be remembered as the person who laid the foundation of destroying Hong Kong's civil service, disrespecting freedom of expression, ignoring HKers' will against Art.23, and talking so much without taking right actions.
Not only the problematic GBCC corrupted the @FCDOGovUK, the office's own China capability programme has remained a small-circle since its establishment! Not even the modest China skeptics are invited, let alone having some open call for inputs from thinktanks and academia.

For over a year, Taiwan has requested additional flights between Taipei and Canadian destinations with a willing carrier to service the increase.
The Liberals responded with typical bureaucratic delays relying on process.
Yet today, the government moved quickly to announce expanded service to China.

We once hoped that he would take a different approach on China as promised. Sadly, he was with ex-Prince Andrew and Lord Mandelson and opened the floodgate to Peking.
He has to go.
🔴 UPDATE: Sir Keir Starmer has admitted that he misled Parliament over Lord Mandelson’s failed vetting – but claimed it was inadvertent ↓

Taiwan's willingness to do absolutely anything and everything to keep the chip boom from putting pressure on the wildly undervalued Taiwan dollar is unw=matched ...

The gov stopped media from going into Wang Fuk Court, and pressured charities for not helping residents to pickup their stuff. No temp. lifts, 3hr stay max.
This is how cruel the Hong Kong gov treats homeowners.

Peter Mandelson’s firm, Global Counsel, worked on behalf of a Chinese state entity linked to the country’s military and security establishment to undermine British scrutiny of a CCP-led corporate coup within Imagination Technologies, the UK’s second biggest microchip company. Afterwards, Imagination’s technology and core assets were transferred to two Chinese companies, one part-owned by the Russian government. Imagination’s “military grade” technology is in roughly 25% of smartphones and 40% of modern cars.
ANY COMPETENT VETTING would have raised this as a red flag.

Robbins was sacked following at least one call with PM y’day evening. But I picked up quite a bit of disquiet in Whitehall over this last night.
One ally of Robbins told me it was ‘awful treatment of a v good public servant’ Another former senior mandarin told me it didn’t make sense, arguing that if someone failed vetting, the first thing a perm sec would do is “share that with their political masters”.
Robbins has been summoned to the FA committee to explain why he told MPs in Sept Mandelson’s trying had ‘concluded with DV clearance being granted’. So many Qs to answer in all of this…
Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister @darrenpjones says the decision to overturn the decision to deny Peter Mandelson security vetting is a "failing of the state".
