In @DMSabatini’s own words, published in my interview with him for @PirateWires: “They wanted me to suffer, they wanted pain, and they did it. They were very explicit in what they wanted. Thankfully, they wrote it all down, so that’s what the jury saw.”
I think that’s the simplest answer to your question.
Now, I don’t want to put words in David Sabatini’s mouth, but, speaking for myself, I would go one step further and say that what happened to him was about a culture that elevates mediocrity at the expense of excellence, especially male genius; a culture that is suspicious of the concept of excellence altogether.
Beyond that, rather than understanding that the men (and women—but less relevant to this conversation) who are gifted with genius are what once made academia great, academia assumed, rather circularly, that it great because it was academia. Total Goodheart’s Law vindication. Academic bureaucrats (including faculty with the spirit of bureaucrats) believed, and still largely believe, that individual academics are replacable, that anyone is as good as anyone else, that certain groups (white, male) need to be knocked down a peg and others promoted, independent of merit.
And I think that’s ultimately why Sabatini made such a perfect target. Many of the text conversations from MIT/Whitehead that he references that came out during the court proceedings show how so much of this was motivated by a sense that, no, not “just anyone” could be David Sabatini, not “just anyone” could do the work he did, or create the pipeline of scientists he did, and that’s why he had to be taken down, the most dubious grounds would suffice so that those taking him down could prove they did it. People like him in the academy exist as a perpetual reminder that some people, in research as in life, simply operate at a different level, and many academics and especially blank slatist bureaucrats simply can’t tolerate that.

The part I don’t fully understand is why did they hate this guy so much ? Just jealousy at his success? Spurned lovers ? Guys of his stature in science are typically untouchable within their fiefdoms. Was he blocking grant money from others ?
kara swisher is absolutely psychotic. edward "big balls" coristine was not even drinking age when he joined DOGE because he wanted to serve his country. he never broke the law. he's done nothing but admirable work for the government since. she nonetheless wants him destroyed.
Kara Swisher: "They could just pick a few people. To me, that's the way you go. You pick like a Hegseth, a Musk, and I don't know, Big Balls."
"Rather than go for Trump, go for everybody. Make it so broad that it'll exhaust people who just do want to move on."
The left is already celebrating, and they're telling us exactly what they plan to do after the midterms. GET OUT AND VOTE!
it's obvious why kara would target someone like big balls, however. he's young and white and male and proudly american — everything she hates, and also a threat. she's scared of young people veering right, and her goal is to terrify them back into the DNC. this is commie shit.

Tyler Cowen:
'I am not even sure what to say at this point. We need a radical revaluation of this work, and of the associated policy arguments. More generally, this is only a single step in the story of how AI is going to revise economic science, and indeed past research more generally. As I stress in many of my recent talks, there will be significant gains and losses in status, with the losses often outweighing the gains. I see this as one of those cases.'

Neeraja Deshpande: Do you feel vindicated?
David Sabatini: Yes. I’d been saying that once someone looks at all the data, at all the documents, they will come to a different conclusion. And I think a jury trial — seven women, six men — is the gold standard for adjudicating things in the world.
It really made me so proud to be an American and to see how a jury trial operates — the formality, the care, the attempts to remove bias, the protocol. I hadn’t experienced those things.
Former MIT scientist David Sabatini just won $6 million in a landmark case against false allegations of r*pe and sexual assault, which destroyed his career.
Once on track to win the Nobel Prize, Sabatini’s ex-girlfriend accused him of r*pe in 2020 and began calling him the ‘Weinstein of science.’ He was later accused of perpetuating a “bro culture” in his lab. As a result, he was stripped of all his funding, lost his job, and went bankrupt.
We interviewed Sabatini (@DMSabatini) about the verdict, which he says made him “proud to be an American.”

I thought I knew every horrible thing about this story, but it was not until I read @neerajadeshp's interview with Sabatini that I realized how total his unpersoning was

As I was saying.
According to The New York Times: Not only is Daniel J. Sullivan in Alaska running solely to confuse voters, the top Democratic candidate in the state was involved in recruiting Dan Sullivans for this very purpose.
Totally corrupt, unethical, and condemnable.
david sabatini is one of the brightest scientists in america. years after a fake rape accusation shattered his life and career, he sued his accuser and won. he discussed the details of this shocking story with @neerajadeshp for pirate wires:

Your options as a woman in show business appear to be do nothing at all and have people post “what happened to her” before and after photos, accusing you of not being 23 forever, or trying to stop the ravages of time and have people post “what happened to her” before and after photos, accusing you of not being 23 forever. Or, if you’re in the top .1% of genetics like Helen Mirren, you get to be used as an example of how to “age gracefully”. Bleak.

Replying to @verge
This article is full of blatant misinformation.
"The components Luckey specified that are planned to be American-made from the start are the display glass, the frame around the display, and parts of the ribbon component."
No. That is not what I said. This was a response to a specific question about the display modules in the current prototype vs the final product. As I explicitly said, BlueChip has American chips, batteries, metallics, plastics, glass, etc, and we have a clear technical roadmap to 100% American components.
"It sounds like BlueChip’s first laptop will be well below the 65-percent requirement to count as American-made"
This is nuts. There is a reason no other reporter has came to this conclusion. One hint might be the extended discussion we had explicitly about the government requirements for American-made hardware and why meeting that bar is so important.
"Palmer Luckey is of course a controversial figure, with his history of fueling right wing troll farms"
This never happened. You are pushing a lie The Verge has pushed for over a decade now. Yes, you have written a bunch of stories claiming this happened, but it just ain't so. I gave $9,000 to a group that ran a single anti-Clinton billboard. The "right wing troll farms" narrative was a fabricated story pushed shortly before the 2016 election because Dems desperately wanted a right-wing equivalent to the actually-real Correct The Record, an online astroturfing organization that paid people to troll and "correct" Trump supporters online.
But there was no such thing. It was all disinformation. Which is why most of the stories about it were later deleted. Yet here you are, lying again.

This! @christianbrits pans the "unethical travesty" that is Nathan Fielder's You Can See Everything.
"There's no getting around the fact that Nathan Fielder made a crooked bargain to get his documentary made," he writes.
I agree. I'm surprised, and a bit disappointed, that more people aren't denouncing the filmmakers' tactics. Fielder made a documentary about someone who conned people out of money they were owed—and then goes and does something... kind of similar.

San Francisco’s budget is $17B - the largest per capita major county budget in the USA. More than Singapore or Oslo.
It doesn’t feel like that bc of rampant corruption by @sfgov. Lighting another $100M of taxes on fire will change nothing.
Vote NO on J (and all new taxes).
