Paul Pierce went live with STRIPPERS and lost his ESPN job days later. 💀 Poker, weed, girls dancing. The NBA champion broadcast his friend’s birthday party on Instagram. When ESPN called to investigate and asked him what happened, Pierce says he answered: “You didn’t see it?” The company wanted a public apology. He refused. “I got fired for having some entertainment.” Pierce knew he worked for a Disney-owned network. He still didn’t think the party justified firing him. “I mean, what did I do wrong?”

I think we give athletes too much credit as people just because they’re good at their sport. Someone wins a few championships and suddenly fans are defending things they’d never accept from anyone else. I get being attached to a player you grew up watching. But you don’t actually know them, and you don’t have to defend everything they do. If my favorite player treats someone badly, I’m not going to bring up his stats. What would that even prove? He’s good at basketball? We already knew that. At the same time, I can still watch his old games and appreciate how good he was. I don’t feel the need to pretend he had no talent because I’ve lost respect for him personally. Whatever consequences he deserves should depend on what he did, not how much fans love or hate him. I have a similar problem with athletes being punished for where they’re from. I don’t think someone should lose the chance to compete simply because their government broke international law. Most athletes don’t decide what their country does. They spend years training, often from childhood, and then find out their nationality might matter more than whether they’ve earned their place. Of course, an athlete can be involved themselves. If they’ve supported or helped carry out something wrong, that deserves scrutiny. But I want to know what that person actually did before deciding they should be held responsible. I wouldn’t want to answer for every decision my government makes. So I don’t think it’s fair to expect that from someone else just because they represent their country in a sport. For me, it comes down to judging people individually. Being a champion shouldn’t excuse your actions, and being born in a particular country shouldn’t be an accusation.

More incentives don’t always mean more rewards for your vote 👀 The amount you receive also depends on your share of the gauge’s voting weight. Before voting on Matchbox, check these three things 🧵
