My issue with the “never make a kid hug if they don’t want to” discourse is that as well as bodily autonomy, kids need to learn about social obligations & the importance of being kind even when you don’t feel like it. Being taught that your feelings are what’s most important just leads to self-centred kids.
Yes, parents should be perceptive about whether the kid feels unsafe somehow, as opposed to say “no I don’t wanna go hug grandma because I’m watching TV”. And yes, relatives wanting a hug need to chill out a bit & understand that kids will be kids. But when a child says “no, I don’t want to” about almost anything else, we don’t simply accept that they should have no obligations to others & know what’s best for themselves. There’s gotta be some sensible middle ground in all this.

In addition to Israel's systematic campaign of mass murder, torture, forced expulsion, its forces always take time out from their gratuitous violence toward humans to remind the world of their petty brutality against the smallest symbols of humanity and normalcy in Gaza.

to be clear scolding random voters for not falling in line rather than using one’s platform to pressure the most powerful person on earth to do The Obvious Right Thing is 100% anti-politics, it’s saying people can’t change anything. THIS—make no mistake—is the height of nihilism

Just stopped @AnthropicAI's Claudebot from completely ddos'ing a site with a large phpbb forum.
Seriously uncool to be that aggressive with data-collection for your LLM.

this is super valid and great to come to as an epiphany in a blog post if you're a college kid or a random schmuck and kinda weird to do if you've held a high prestige AI job for a full year.
The dataset is everything.

The girl behind the photo. A reminder that Palestinians killed by Israel are not just numbers or white shrouds. They were once smiling 5 year olds who once hoped for peace. ✌🏽 💔😞
