a pattern i observe is that new (like REALLY NEW) aesthetics are usually residue of solving problems eg. the iconic inktrap fonts became popular bc ink would pool in corners when printing on rough paper

calling the rationalists "American Mohists" fits surprisingly well
American Mohists could be more like the original and might be better for it, but they would do themselves well to understand exactly why Legalists snuffed them out but not the Confucians or the Taoists.

we should clarify that in his mention of firearms proficiency, Scott is being presumptuous — as the challenged party, Pinker has the choice of weapons

People often have a sense that all the low-hanging scientific fruit has been picked, or that all the fruit that’s left can only be picked by huge teams with lots of funding. But in fact, lots of projects are just the right scale for Indie Science. slimemoldtimemold.com/2026/1…

I think you've done enough calling us paranoid and preposterous. The next step is for you to defend your position in public against someone who will push back against it. I'm happy to meet you for a debate anywhere, anytime. You're a world-famous veteran of dozens of debates against the world's top intellectuals, and I've never argued in public before, so adjusting for the relative correctness of our positions, if you're a betting man I'm happy to put my $5000 against your $1000 (ie 5:1 odds in your favor) that I'll win by some standard of audience opinion change. Let me know if you're interested and we can hash out details.

information is valuable and should be sought out from all available sources imagine a man who deprives himself of valuable information just because that information is on YouTube

Finishing up my first week of "potatoes, carrots, and butter for dinner"! :) I hadn't had butter in so long that it tasted kind of gross for the first few days, but I quickly adapted :) I'm boiling 1 cup baby carrots and 2lb of potatoes together, then adding 1tsp butter (not margarine) and salt and pepper to taste. I'm adding butter because apparently vitamin A needs to be eaten together with fat in order to be absorbed. #potatodiet

I had assumed the cause of T2 diabetes was fairly well understood, but it seems like we know the factors but not the actual cause. Does @mold_time or its readers know more? Is dietary fat or sugar the bigger factor in developing T2?

another good perspective on "why should everyone get involved with science?" because it's part of how to be in touch with reality!
witnessed some conversations handwringing about the problem of excess introspection. it’s a pretty simple issue to address ime. the point is to arrive at some hypotheses that you can test irl. then you test them. outside your head. the proof of good introspection is a better life

People mostly couldn't tell the difference. Something interesting is that when we were in Paris, some of the people who failed the test had been adamant that the French ketchup tastes better. I am continually surprised by how much expectation influences perception.
Is French ketchup (containing e.g. sugar) tastier than American ketchup (containing e.g. corn syrup)? Pre-register your prediction! @lkesteloot and I are doing a blind a/b test dinner party with 4 guests, with French fries and Heinz ketchup. Ingredient lists in first comment
