Baron Munchausen, in 1826 and already getting himself into impossible trouble. mflibra.com/products/1826-sc… This scarce 1826 edition of The Surprising Travels and Adventures of Baron Munchausen keeps its original hand-coloured folding frontispiece, showing the Baron rescuing his horse from yet another perilous situation, along with a hand-coloured engraved title page. The contemporary dark leather binding, richly embossed and finished with marbled endpapers, gives the book plenty of period character. A wonderfully lively copy of a tale that was never especially interested in behaving itself. #BookWithASoul #MFLIBRA #OwnAPieceOfHistory #BaronMunchausen #RudolfErichRaspe #HandColoured #GeorgianBooks #IllustratedBooks #LeatherBinding #AntiquarianBooks #RareBooks #BookCollectors

Today, we lost a pillar of our community. Voto Latino’s founders honor Dolores Huerta, who “always showed up” and saw the spirit in young people before the world was ready to. Her work is not done. Let’s carry it forward. ¡Sí, se puede, Dolores!

Lamont Thomas adopted 5 siblings so they would not be split apart in foster care. The single dad from Buffalo had already raised more than thirty kids over fifteen years. He took in Zendaya, Jamel, Nakia, Major and Macaela after learning they were headed for permanent separation.

Dolores Huerta was a woman of unparalleled conviction, unshakeable courage, and, perhaps above all, unlimited compassion. Her work as Co-Founder of United Farm Workers and throughout her 96 years transformed our nation’s labor movement and fundamentally altered the course of the 20th Century. Indeed, today’s America was built upon Ms. Huerta's lifetime of service and advocacy. Tomorrow’s must be shaped by the blueprint she left behind.   I stand alongside countless others in grieving the passing of this true hero of our history, as well as the loss of her moral, principled leadership at a time when it is most needed.

I was proud to join @MetCouncil to open its new $25 million kosher food bank in Canarsie. Supporting 344 food pantry partners, this investment will help bring fresh, nutritious food to more New Yorkers. Thank you to everyone working to fight hunger in our communities.

Dolores Huerta was a hero of mine. When she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962, people thought Dolores was crazy. “How are you going to organize farm workers,” she remembered being asked. "They are poor, powerless immigrants.” But that’s exactly what she did, helping thousands of migrant laborers working in brutal conditions make their voices heard, and demand something better. Dolores spent the rest of her life fighting for marginalized communities, even as she herself faced sexism and abuse — including, as she revealed earlier this year, from Cesar Chavez and others within her own movement. She also came up with a pretty good slogan, “Si, se puede” — Yes, we can — that I too often get credit for. But as usual, Dolores got there first. Michelle and I are thinking of Dolores’s family, the people whose lives she changed, and everyone who drew inspiration from her example. Photo credit: National Archives, Obama Presidential Library

Wonderland, still wonderfully close to its Victorian beginnings. mflibra.com/products/1872-ra… Published by Macmillan in 1872, this early edition appeared just seven years after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland first reached readers in its familiar form. Tenniel’s forty-two original illustrations are all here, while the green half-leather binding, gilt spine and marbled endpapers give this copy a handsome character of its own. A lovely early Alice, with the feeling that Wonderland was still something quite new. #BookWithASoul #MFLIBRA #OwnAPieceOfHistory #AliceInWonderland #LewisCarroll #JohnTenniel #VictorianBooks #EarlyEdition #IllustratedBooks #AntiquarianBooks #RareBooks #BookCollectors
