Imagine you’re on a fancy dinner cruise in Thailand, and suddenly the crew tells everyone to drop to the floor because the boat is about to squeeze under a bridge.
That’s what happened to one tourist on day 11 of her trip. With the water running high, the bridges along the route were sitting so low that there was barely any room between the roof of the boat and the concrete above. Passengers had to get down on the floor and keep their eyes straight ahead as the boat slid underneath, close enough that standing up could have been deadly. Dinner, drinks, and a near brush with a bridge, all in one night.

The government want to roll out facial recognition faster and further. It will soon be everywhere. We will be the most surveillance big brother state on earth. Shabana Mahmood described it as the greatest advance in policing since DNA.
Yet there is a gaping great hole, inconsistency and unfairness right at the heart of this. One particular group have a get out of jail free card. They don’t need to comply at all. Muslims who wear the Burqa/Niqab. If you or I cover our faces deliberately in front of a camera we will be stopped and questioned. Yet this group can wander the streets, shops, supermarkets freely whilst completely anonymous. It’s embedding a two tier application of the law and it’s totally unfair. So either scrap ALL face coverings in public with no religious exemptions or scrap facial recognition. You cant have it both ways.
