As schools expel pregnant girls, as a nation, it important to assess the cost of inaction. MPs under @_UPFCT pledge to engage @Educ_SportsUg on implementation of the 2020 school re-entry guidelines and review of the guidelines to ensure adolescent mothers return to school.
Through the SHE SOARS project, the Centre for Reproductive Rights, together with our Uganda partners @ncduganda @worudet @youthchaperonug and other stakeholders, we engaged the Uganda Parliamentary Forum to End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy to strengthen advocacy for learners’ rights.
Discussions focused on promoting respectful pregnancy testing procedures in schools and reviewing school re-entry guidelines to ensure pregnant learners can continue their education without unnecessary barriers.

It is important for learners, teachers and community members to understand why pregnant girls and adolescent mothers need to return and complete school. They are key actors if we are to end stigma and discrimination of pregnant girls and adolescent mothers in schools.
“Ask your parents what their dreams were. Many had big aspirations, but some had to leave school. The school re-entry system allows girls to return after pregnancy. Schools must welcome them back,” said Mr. Jonathan representative from Uganda’s Ministry of Health.
Pregnancy should not permanently end a girl’s education. Re-entry must be supported by schools, families and communities.

Today is International Safe Abortion Day, and the truth is abortion is essential healthcare.
Across Africa, there has been progress in protecting reproductive rights, including through the Maputo Protocol, which recognizes access to safe abortion in specific circumstances. Yet restrictive laws, criminalization, stigma and systemic barriers continue to prevent many women and girls from accessing the care they need.
Unsafe abortions continue to contribute to preventable complications and maternal deaths, while uncertainty in the law discourages healthcare providers from providing care.
We call on African governments and policymakers to act urgently to:
🔴 Reform restrictive abortion laws and remove vague and punitive provisions
🔴 Recognize safe abortion as essential healthcare, accessible without stigma, discrimination or unnecessary barriers
🔴 Strengthen health systems and equip healthcare providers to deliver safe abortion and post-abortion care
🔴 Ensure accurate, non-judgmental information on abortion and reproductive health
🔴 Expand access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education to support informed reproductive choices
Safe abortion saves lives. It is healthcare, a human rights issue and a matter of justice.
