I’m increasingly convinced that what enraged some of Charlie’s fiercest campus critics was the moment he handed them the microphone. Because then they had to do something much harder than denounce him. They had to explain themselves. A slogan can sound profound when nobody questions it. An accusation can sound authoritative when nobody asks for evidence. But a few calm follow-up questions can reveal how little reasoning sits beneath all that certainty. What do you mean? How do you know? What would your solution actually require? Who would enforce it? What happens when it fails? Those are ordinary questions. Any serious argument should be able to withstand them. Yet watch how quickly an exchange can collapse into indignation when someone is asked to define the very terms they’re using to condemn everyone else. That is the danger of an education that rewards ideological conformity: students can learn which conclusions earn applause without learning how to reach—or defend—those conclusions themselves. They know the approved vocabulary. They know whom to blame. They know when to express outrage. But can they explain the mechanism? Recognize a contradiction? Consider evidence that threatens their position? Moral conviction carries a responsibility to think. Feeling righteous does not relieve anyone of the obligation to make sense. And when you demand that society reorganize itself around your beliefs, society is entitled to ask how your proposal works. Define your terms. Show your evidence. Explain the trade-offs. Follow your ideas through to their consequences. A microphone gives you the floor. It doesn’t give you an argument. This video drove young, white, educated men and women insane! But they couldn't articulate the WHY!
