Mass protests brought towns in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region to a standstill last week as demonstrators, largely university students, took their frustration to the streets over the June 18 massacre of hundreds of civilians by rebel fighters.
Protests began in the capital, Addis Ababa, on June 25, before larger demonstrations were held in the cities of Gondar and the Amhara capital, Bahir Dar, through July 1. Protesters denounced the killings and criticised the government’s inability to curb worsening ethnic violence.
“I went to the demonstration because I’m sick of violence against women and children,” said Geremew Habtemariam, a student in Bahir Dar who took part in protests last week. “Being ethnic Amhara is becoming a death sentence in some parts of the country.”
Days after the protests, reports emerged of yet another mass killing of civilians in the country’s Oromia region on Monday.
In the tragedy that triggered the protest, armed men killed hundreds of people two weeks ago in the Gimbi district of Oromia, some 380km west of Addis Ababa. The victims all belonged to the Amhara, Ethiopia’s second-largest ethnic group, and witnesses say killings began in the morning and continued unabated until the rebels left at about 4pm that day.
Weeks later, bereaved father Abdu Ahmed said he remains broken over the loss of his teenage daughters Hayat and Birtukan. “They shot at everyone, even children and the elderly,” he told Al Jazeera over the phone. “What kind of madman targets defenceless girls?”
“I’ve personally lost count of the number of bodies I’ve buried,” Ali Said, a survivor told Al Jazeera. “Many died from gunshots or in the fire, but I’ve discovered bodies that were hacked to death as well.”

Amhara billionaire and businessman Belayneh Kinde paid a total of 40 million birr in ransom to secure the release of 10 fuel-tanker drivers abducted following an armed attack in Lalo Asabi Woreda, West Wollega Zone, Oromia Region, according to sources. The drivers were among 14 tanker drivers abducted during the September 6, 2026 attack near Dengoro Ashewa. Four million birr was reportedly paid for each of the 10 drivers, who have since been released and arrived safely in Addis Ababa.
Earlier reporting from the Ethiopian Heavy Truck Drivers Association confirmed that a convoy of fuel tankers traveling toward Assosa was attacked in West Wollega on September 6. Armed men opened fire on the convoy, burned several tankers and abducted drivers. Some of the trucks belonged to Belayneh Kinde, whose business group operates a major transport division. The attackers subsequently demanded ransom for the abducted drivers.
The latest information indicates that 10 of the 14 abducted drivers were released after the combined 40 million birr payment. The fate of the remaining four drivers was not specified. Sources also did not disclose whether the ransom was transferred through the banking system or delivered directly in cash.
The same sources raised questions about how such a large payment was transferred to the armed group and claimed that senior security officials may have been involved in facilitating either the kidnapping or the movement of the ransom money.

Petrol and diesel prices have doubled in Assosa, Benishangul-Gumuz Region, following an Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) attack on a convoy of fuel tanker trucks in Dengoro Ashewa, Lalo Asabi Woreda, West Wollega Zone, Oromia Region.
During the attack, 12 fuel tanker trucks were destroyed, disrupting fuel supplies from West Wollega to Assosa and blocking the main road connecting the areas. The resulting shortage has pushed the price of petrol in Assosa to as high as 1,000 birr per liter.

On the morning of September 18, 2026, Gada Commando forces that entered Abeshege Woreda, Gurage Zone, Central Ethiopia Region, from multiple directions began burning homes belonging to Amhara residents in an area locally known as Hudad Five Kebele, according to sources from the area.
The burning of residential homes has triggered significant displacement, with numerous Amhara civilians fleeing their communities amid growing security concerns. Sources said residents continue to leave the area as Gada Commando forces remain active in Hudad Five Kebele.

🚨 Minjar Shenkora residents say compensation tied to Oromia ID change as crops are destroyed for expressway project
North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region — September 16, 2026: Residents of Amora Bet and Melka Jilo in Minjar Shenkora Woreda say farmers affected by construction of the Adama–Awash expressway are being told they must obtain Oromia Region identification cards before receiving compensation for land, crops, and property affected by the project.
The expressway route has reportedly been redirected westward through Amora Bet Kebele and the developing town of Melka Jilo. Farmers say contractors clearing the route have destroyed planted crops, while affected residents seeking compensation have been instructed to travel to Boset Woreda in East Shewa Zone, Oromia Region, and obtain Oromia Region IDs before their claims will be processed.
Residents maintain that their communities have historically been administered under Minjar Shenkora Woreda, North Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region. “Since long ago, we have been administered under Minjar Shenkora Woreda, North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region,” one resident said. “But now, as our land is being taken for development, being told to change our identification cards to the Oromia Region and having our planted crops destroyed is a horrific injustice.”
Residents also say they have been warned to leave the affected area by mid-Meskerem or face unspecified action, raising fears of displacement and an administrative boundary dispute. They are calling on Minjar Shenkora Woreda, North Shewa Zone, and Amhara Region authorities to intervene, protect their property rights, and ensure compensation without requiring them to change their regional identification.
🚨Breaking : Door to door massacre of Amhara civilians in Awra Godana town of Amhara region by Oromia Special Forces:
Context: Awra Godana, is located in Amhara region close to the borders of Oromia and Afar, a few kilometers from the Ethio-Djibouti railway. The Oromia government has been trying to annex this strategically located town into Oromia. Last year they sent their special forces to attack the town disguised as militia, even killing a dozen federal police. They got routed by the local Amhara militia, losing at least 26 of their fighters. The incident even got international media attention. The Oromia government claimed Fano invaded Oromia, they even had the @cgtnafrica reporter @GirumChala, who has business links to Oromia PP, report on @CGTN that it was Amharas who invaded Oromia. It’s important to know that the Oromia Special Forces were never disband in April, only the Amhara Special Forces.
What happened yesterday and today:
Since ENDF is losing ground in most parts of Amhara, the Oromia government wants to annex this town to take over the Ethio-Djibouti route. There was no Fano presence in the town so ENDF encircled the town yesterday to prevent the locals from getting any Fano reinforcements. This was followed by an attack on the town by Oromia Special Forces (OSF), the locals were able to defend themselves with high casualties for OSF. Amhara Civilians strong enough to run fled the town. Today the Oromia government sent more OSF reinforcements backed by ENDF artillery support. The locals fought until they ran out of Ammo. Fano couldn’t make it to the town due to ENDFs blockade. This is when Oromia Special Forces started going door to door and killing any Amhara civilians they could find. They brought Oromo youth from the neighboring Oromia region towns to loot as many properties as possible. The looting and killing is still going on.

Journalist: The town of Awra Godana, in Minjar Wereda of Amhara region is under the full invasion and occupation of the Oromia Special Forces (OSF), there is door to door killing and looting. The residents of the town are fleeing for their lives. Those who couldn’t flee are in dire situations.
Witness: Houses are burning, people have fled the town. The town is fully controlled by Oromia Special forces. What’s shocking is the level of looting, people (from the bordering Oromia towns) are looting everything, the Oromia Special forces are loading trucks full of peoples properties, every house has been looted by OSF. And ENDF is behind them overseeing it, the forest is full of people (Oromos from Kireyu) running with looted properties. We have several pictures and videos of these incidents, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. They’re destroying the entire town. Residents of Awra Godana, those who can have all fled to the forests. The town is being completely destroyed.
Journalist: It’s being reported that the ones killing people door to door are Oromo Special Forces.
Witness: There’s a lot of them (OSF), they control most of the higher positions. They’ve taken over the entire city, there’s still people looting right now. The entire forest is full of people (Oromos from neighboring region) running away with looted properties. Even the OSF loading peoples belongings with trucks and taking them to Oromia. We think they’ve incited Oromos from neighboring towns to come loot because they’re everywhere. I’ve never seen this type of cruelty in my life, we are devastated.

🚨 Colonel Kiros Goytom reportedly executed after ENDF’s 71st Division was destroyed by Fano on Dawunt front
Colonel Kiros Goytom, commander of the ENDF’s 71st Division under the 403rd Corps of the 12th Command, was reportedly executed on orders from senior commanders following the destruction of his division during two days of fighting with Fano forces on the Dawunt front on September 7–8, 2026.
According to Mereb Media, citing military sources, the 71st Division suffered extensive losses during the fighting, with troops reportedly killed or captured and several senior officers killed after sustaining injuries. Colonel Kiros, who was directing operations near the front with ZU-23 and DShK support, reportedly withdrew toward Wegel Tena in Delanta Woreda with fewer than 50 remaining troops.
Mereb Media reported that senior officials from the 12th Command and 403rd Corps subsequently conducted a review and ordered Colonel Kiros executed for the loss of the division. He was reportedly detained and executed along with bodyguards who attempted to prevent the order from being carried out.

Mass grave discovered in the recently liberated town of Wegel Tena, Delanta district. Fano fighters uncovered the site inside the regime's camp following last week's successful operation. The camp was used to extrajudicially execute and secretly bury civilians and ethnic Amharas within the ENDF without notifying their families.

Anyone with a rational mind could’ve easily predicted that an attempt to recognize Somaliland as an independent country could lead to #Egypt having a military base on the boarders of #Ethiopia for the first time in recent history. But we all know that Ethiopia’s foreign policy decisions aren’t made by the experts who have weighed the pros and cons of major decisions, it’s done at a whim of a deranged Prime Minister who’s turned a country with thousands years of farsighted diplomatic history into a client state of the #UAE. The MoU with #Somaliland was not signed in the interest of Ethiopia, it was signed in the interest of the #UAE that has been trying to punish #Djibouti for expelling @DPWorldUAE in 2018 and sabotaging its plans of controlling all the ports in the Horn of Africa. Now almost 9 months since the signing of the MoU, the agreement has not been finalized, and Ethiopia has nothing to show for it except being seen as a destabilizing force in the region, Egypt at it doorsteps, and completely isolated from all its neighbors. Fano fighters in Ethiopia’s Amhara region claim to have captured more than 100 government soldiers and seized a large cache of weapons following clashes in Wag Hemra.
Several videos have emerged appearing to show Ethiopian government soldiers surrendering to the group.
Fano is a loosely organised Amhara militia movement that has been fighting Ethiopia’s federal army since 2023.
