New preprint led by @thelablab:
Our meta-analysis of 579 neuroimaging studies finds little evidence for a single, fixed neural core of consciousness. Instead, the findings support distributed systems that combine differently depending on context.

This indirectly relates to our current understanding of pain. Network-level integration is necessary for proper pain processing. An anesthetized organism does not respond to noxious input.

@netphys1 et al. find that patients with chronic pain and high post-traumatic stress symptom show decreased working memory brain activity and have stronger connections to threat-related brain regions under high cognitive load. Learn more in #PAIN bit.ly/4wFTSjp

The code for our paper has been released: github.com/ThomasYeoLab/CBIG…!
We showed that MS-HBM can reliably estimate individual-specific rs-fMRI networks in drug-resistant epilepsy and that individual-specific language network topography can predict task-fMRI language dominance.
Launching scienceofplacebo.org: a living bibliography of placebo and nocebo research. New papers screened & tagged daily by design, population, outcome and findings, with a searchable database (currently about 5,000 papers), an interactive researcher map, events, news and discussion.
42 new #fmri tutorials to accompany our new book Elements of fMRI, with @fMRIstats. Run code in both #python and #matlab in your browser to explore. 7 sections, from conceptual foundations to machine learning and AI.

Dealing with difficult people may be hazardous to your health.
Data: Each additional "hassler" in your network predicts 1.5% faster biological aging—and worse health a year later. Non-spouse family hasslers are the most problematic.
Some ties aren't worth the toll they take.

Most neurons seem to be generalists, not specialists. Cortical circuits prioritize diversity over categorical structure.

PatientSpace: A multimodal graph-based latent representation framework for modeling neurodegenerative disease heterogeneity
• A multimodal Variationnal autoencoder learns the latent space with consistency loss.
• Graph-based neighbors yield interpretable matches in diagnosis and imaging features.
• MCI projection into PatientSpace supports early identification of converters.

The paper argues that two major puzzles (how the brain creates a unified experience and maintains an “edge-of-chaos” state) may be explained by continuous electromagnetic fields generated by neural activity.
