This one hurts. Few pieces of media were more formative that Star Trek and its long commitment to social justice, equity and a positive vision of the future.
Because the state doesn't provide adequate support, vast amounts of money, time and energy are wasted on greedy, private operators who act as middle men for desperate people who need help. This should be illegal but also, the government should support people who are suffering!
It’s been a week since we published our investigation into Oklahomans traveling to California for free rehab.
I’m Kayla Branch, a reporter with The Frontier. I spent over a year working on this story, talking with Oklahomans who had made the trip, and traveling out to California to see these rehabs myself. Here’s what we found:

I'm just glad I don't live in a dictatorship but a free democracy where every few years I can vote for a different banker or lawyer or landlord that represents the vast network of powerful corporate interests that controls every aspect of my life from cradle to grave
Malcolm Gladwell is a fucking fraud and has made a career and millions just spewing bullshit that falls apart if you have a working brain or decide to lightly fact-check him. A phenomenally stupid man and grifter.
I have just published a piece that is very important to me. It's about why so many "progressives" and people on "the left" are lying to us right now about crime, safety, and repression, and what we should be doing instead. equalityalec.substack.com/p/…
It is wild how much corporations control our lives (environmental regulations, pricing power, tax policy, labor rights, etc) and still folks want to blame trans people or immigrants. Dumb.

Can’t even begin to imagine the reasoning here, but obviously quite funny that this observation only comes after the Lula & Student List wins yesterday, and not any of the internationalized right wing victories of the past year
The stupidest part of this argument, and why it isn't persuasive to anyone, is that there is a fundamental mismatch in America between wages and rents. Vast swaths of the population can't afford shelter. Skyrocketing rents to fix broken housing isn't a freaking solution!
That’s $375,000 per apartment unit to renovate btw.
I’ll keep pointing this out until I die or until New York amends vacancy control to fix its broken housing system. Whichever comes first.

The fact that Brazilian markets panicked and crashed the three times Lula was previously elected (and are doing so a fourth time now), only to boom during his terms in office, poses a real challenge to the efficient market hypothesis.
This stuff makes us objectively less safe. Putting incredible economic pressure and already desperate people isn't going to lead to better outcomes. This judge is psychotic for behaving like this.
Oklahoma law says some low-income defendants must receive relief from court fines and fees. So why are some judges refusing?
A legal battle could affect defendants across the state. Read @readfrontier's latest investigation with @kosuradio: readfrontier.org/stories/okl…

A study of 60 cities finds that permit waits explain 30% to 43% of the gap in completion times between slow and fast cities.
A 2026 study of LA lots found that buyers pay a 50% premium for land that already has permits.

"We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate.
We cannot have monstrously huge corporations earning millions & billions, paying no taxes to this country & trying to steer this country's election results."

For Angie Nixon, November 3 will mark not the end but another beginning. “The deeper reckoning comes after the election,” writes Zak Cheney-Rice. “She wants to reshape Florida politics — win or lose, with or without national Democrats’ approval.” nymag.visitlink.me/ozxg7f
