#booktalkwithchai

We used to have chandragupta maurya, jodha akbar, razia sultan, shani, porus, jhansi ki rani, and the most iconic bharat ek khoj and yk what happened
india sucks in making historical drama they have no creativity when it comes to historical dramas either it's always the remake of ramayana or other two three things like use that creativity make fictional dramas you have budgets

There are primarily 4 famous styles of pronouncing R, at least when we compare Hindi, Malayalam and English. 1. Simple or Tapped R (र/ര) The most common R for us. As in Hindi Ram, Malayalam Ravi, or even the American pronunciation of butter. The tongue quickly taps the roof of the mouth once. 2. English Approximant R As in Red, Right, Crore. The tongue slightly curls back without actually touching the roof. This is not a traditional R sound in Hindi or Malayalam. So crore becomes difficult for traditional desi speakers. 3. Rolled R (റ) As in Malayalam കറി (curry). The tongue vibrates repeatedly. Interestingly, Malayalam has both the simple ര and the stronger റ, something Hindi and English doesn't. However this becomes ultimate confusion for new learners. 4. Retroflex R (ഴ) The difficult one! As in Malayalam മഴ (mazha). The tongue curls backward with stiffness, but doesnt tapp or roll. Hindi doesn't have an exact equivalent, though it has a close relative in ड़, as interestingly in करोड़ (crore) or भीलवाड़ा. ड़ is a retroflex flap, where the curled tongue strikes once rather than smoothly flowing like Malayalam ഴ. Interestingly, crore itself becomes a nice example. English crore uses Type 2, while Hindi करोड़ uses Type 1 for र and a retroflex flap for ड़. Malayalam simply calls it കോടി, avoiding the whole R business! For Hindi speakers, moving from the regular र to the English R or Malayalam ഴ can take effort. I usually ask them to first try the English approximant R, or the rolled R, and then gradually work towards the Malayalam retroflex ഴ. Devnagri ड़ is actually a useful compromise because the tongue already knows how to curl backward. Hindi speakers aren't even consciously taught the retroflex sounds they already use, as a category, like ड़ or ण in निपुण, let alone the difference between all these similar but different sounds. Hindustani speakers often shy away from fully pronouncing the few retroflexes left, and even shy from pronounced vowels like ऐ or औ , eventually distancing themselves from sanskrit, while malayalam and south langauges phonetically may sound closer to sanskrit in everyday conversations.
how you pronounce crore is a class signifier

Not very pronounced but subtle humour in a few places- not the primary 'dhvani' imo though. In his story धूप का टुकड़ा, a semantic misunderstanding leads to a couple waiting for each other in a bar named Bonaparte & in front of a statue of Napoleon. Other two excerpts from वे दिन
Wondering about Nirmal Verma - has anyone found humour in his books? I know, personally, he sometimes reflected a sense of humour.

as an anti-theist, i appreciate pier paolo pasolini's christ as a radical and abstruse anti-establishment figure instead of the classical warm model. only another radical at odds with society (like pasolini, a homosexual communist in post-war Italy) could have birthed this film.
Jesus lived 600 years earlier in a far more unrefined era, yet He never owned a single slave. What is most startling about Christ is how He entirely bypassed the cultural traps of antiquity. He easily could have engaged in the socially permissible norms of His day that age horribly now; like marrying a minor, or owning and sexually exploiting slaves. But He didn’t. He lived with absolute moral perfection in a time when the ethical bar was on the floor, and His standard remains flawless today. He is God.

I wrote about China Miéville’s The Rouse for Jacobin. I liked it a lot and have things to say.
“The Rouse” follows a secret British effort to weaponize ghosts amid the Cold War and decolonization. A supernatural spy thriller, a Marxist meditation on history, and a stylistic triumph, China Miéville’s novel is a masterwork two decades in the making. jacobin.com/2026/10/china-mi…

Sick and tired of academics finding coded allusions to different social classes in Victorian novels. Pip wants to be a gentleman guys. Not everything is about class
Imagine studying music and being taught that Beethoven's greatest achievement was revealing the class structures of nineteenth-century Europe. That's essentially what happens in far too many English departments.

NEW | "What happens to the power dynamic when the student is from a lowered caste and the professor is from a privileged caste?" The death of Sahil Wakode, a 2nd-year IIT Bombay student, has reignited critical questions about caste discrimination on Indian campuses and the lack of reliable data on caste-linked suicides. @HemantSorenJMM @RPF_INDIA

FT’s report on Lula’s comeback says Flávio Bolsonaro’s “nine fingers” jab in the final debate, mocking the finger Lula lost in a factory accident at 17 while working nights, became a turning point. The attack let Lula draw a sharp contrast between his own working-class history and Bolsonaro’s background, helping shift momentum in the runoff.

The selected silences continue. The word "rape" is removed from another review. More influential friends close ranks around Mahmood Farooqui, ensuring women know that powerful men will not be held accountable for their actions. This is a disgrace. @KarvaanIndia @Asad_Ashraf88
