agi is impossible because the universe can't generate the amount of smugness needed if the rationalists were right
the "I couldn't help it because x" defense strikes me as strange because it's like "ok, so you're intrinsically evil then"
it seems insane (heh) that we're only allowed to defend ourselves against crimes that are perpetrated by people in a particular mental state
i feel like a lot of agency and happiness stems from simply not having status anxiety
either because you have status or are comfortable in your position
i don't love my job but it lets me larp as someone with high status which i think boosts my mood on net
i've started using codex to answer deep questions about the private company startup research I did for years and this is just so exciting
me, the dumbest physicist, can now do grad school level theoretical work I couldn't begin to teach myself how to do manually
i've learned to stop worrying about the dystopian gig driver hellscape and love the quality of life improvement that gets me free same day shipping instead of having to drive to the store
I think it's dangerous to even consider the idea that a sufficiently complex computer program could be conscious
even if it was possible for it to be true, no good could come if it
one problem with the AI getting so much better is I increase my credulence towards it and become more suseptible to not checking and getting burned
went to church today
I haven't been practicing for a very long time, but still feel nominally catholic
but nothing makes me feel more catholic than walking into church mogging everyone with our four children
if you're scrolling on your phone for no specific reason you should be spending your precious time doing literally anything else
(I'm telling this to myself)
am I missing something, or does the whole "not caring what other people do with their lives" already admit that the thing in question is likely destructive and bad on net?
especially in the defensive sense "why do you care?"
well, why do you care if I care?
i got to be the hero dad figure for some of my students today helping them change a tire and it felt pretty good
"rats and cats have about the same brain, so you should care about rats and cats about the same"
>wow, I should probably care about cats a lot less
"people in the future will view you as a monster for holding common contemporary beliefs"
>wow, I should probably have more sympathy for people in the past
some amount of bug suffering can eventually be equivalent to a human stranger suffering
>wow, you're right, I should start viewing strangers as not much better than a sufficient number of bugs
when you tell someone their intuitions are inconsistent, there almost always more than one way to reconcile them
