here's the problem you get these things (new tech), and they're kind of nice then you hedonically adapt to them so you aren't much happier, but now you have this thing that you kinda built your life around so the idea of losing it feels bad but most of these advances vaporized social capitol and when you complain people are like So YoU dOn'T LiKe MoDeRn MeDiCiNe LuDiTe?

I think part of the reason we're so confused is we impose western ideas like consistency and logical consequences on russia when they demonstrate again and again that they only loosely adhere to them when convenient and always manage to step back from the brink without them

There's an interesting digression here where the reason children are so vulnerable to and forgiving of abuse is because (of course) children are *not able to distinguish* abuse from "correct actions of their parents that they dislike in the moment".

"Since I have no underlying conditions, I estimate my risk at about 5.4% of the base risk of 0.6%. That comes to about 1 in 3000. That’s about three times my annual risk of dying in an auto accident." econlib.org/what-im-thinking…

“the entire notion of public comment on new construction was inherently flawed, because the beneficiaries- the people who would eventually live in the buildings- couldn’t argue their side” Great framing of the issue⁩ @SonjaTrauss⁩ @ConorDougherty nytimes.com/2020/02/13/busin…
