Plumbing. Rockets, life support, closed loop agriculture, waste reprocessing --- it's plumbing all the way down. Mechanical engineering in a field that deals with fluids ....

2/A BW version is complete, slightly modified. The MC-747 is described and diagrammed in US Bomber Projects #21:

During the Apollo Applications Program NASA studied a series of foldable large-scale structures that would launch and deploy using Saturn rockets and the Apollo CSM. One was an X-ray telescope, depicted here in its free-flying configuration after being deployed by the astronauts.

Had the idea of using eye-shaped roundels for some time but never got to try it out until now. While they have some in-universe utility, the main goal was to give the ships a subtle ancient Mediterranean vibe

2/ The way to profit is scale-up. My analysis indicated it will not be immediately profitable due to immaturity of the processes and high cost of space flight. However, there are asteroids with a million times higher concentration of platinum than Earth’s best deposits,… (image credit: m.miningweekly.com/article/p…)

I day dream tethers connected by ZRVTOs will become useful.
hopsblog-hop.blogspot.com/20…
Tether mass goes exponentially with delta V, a lot like Tsiolkovsky's rocket equation.
Having a chain of tethers chops up the delta V exponent in the Moravec and Pearson equations.

Lunar cold trap ice is something else I daydream about — a potential propellant source not at the bottom of a deep gravity well.
Moon ice could be a source of up momentum as it descends through a tether chain to LEO.
Momentum exchange lessens the need for propellant.

I loved this RPG when it came out. Played some great ST games. The Starship Combat Simulator was groundbreaking.

Scholz’s star passed within 0.8 ly of our solar system, tearing out comets from the Kuiper Belt that’ll fall back down on Earth in 2 million years.
Gliese 710 is passing next: 0.16 ly in 1.29 million years, with potentially devastating effects.

1/ The fuselage of this flyback booster is several times the size of that of a 747, but the wings are quite small; possible because the bulk of the flyback booster was empty space. Even so, it would have been an enormous vehicle with a vast surface area.

Our plot of the week shows orbital views of cyclone dust storms near the north polar cap of Mars. The authors investigate how these large-scale atmospheric phenomena could be contributing to periodic oscillations in surface pressure measured by the Perseverance rover (1/2).

ALT This plot shows four views of Mars taken from orbit by Mars Express and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Several cyclone dust storms at the edge of the north polar cap are highlighted, which appear as light and red-toned transient features with several morphologies (spiral, irregular, and arc-shaped).
