The thing about Google clearing a forest in Finland without permits is that they decided that whatever fine they might face is worth it. It doesn’t cost them as much as not getting the land cleared. Because like ALL things, if the punishment is a fine, it isn’t really illegal for rich people.

Which is why they should be banned from *ever* putting any data center in Finland. Or any other country who agrees with those terms. You illegally clear our forests before your permits are finished and you will never ever have a data center in this country, whatever country. That's geographic rape.

The punishment should be reforestation and kiss goodbye to their data center at least 😬

Finland should demand not only fines and reforestation, but that Google’s leadership do it personally. Live on site. Attend every day until the job is complete. Otherwise jail time.

And the fine amount is always completely irrelevant to the damage - almost like collusion is at play..

they need the land confiscated and replanted with trees

This is why punishment needs to be the executives serving time. Monetary fines are meaningless to these types.

Agreed, and google don't own forest cleaning equipment and personel: their contractors and local consulting firm should also answer, plus the local policing authorities because clearing a forest doesn't happen in the dark of single night.

Thats why you need actual consequences and accountability, not just fines We need people in prison, a review of their permits and a huge fine for breaking the law, billions If you dont do this now they’ll just do it again and again and pay the parking ticket

1. Plant new trees to equal the total diameter of the trees that were cut down. That is going to mean buying more land for a lot more trees. 2. Data center cannot be built. 3. Contractors are fined heavily — they know the laws and knew what they were doing.

Grotesque. They should make them replant it and declare it conservation land as the fine.

They NEED to do more than just fine them. This is like the best time to prove to these corporations that they can't just destroy the world. Unfortunately we live in a time where they probably can.
Honestly the best way to make them pay is to have #Google re-plant and manage all those 250K trees. And then make them plant an extra couple thousand trees around #Finland. And then add a hefty fine on top of that. And ban their #datacentre from ever being built there.

Fines for companies and rich people need to be changed to a "percentage of total net worth" and see how fast a lot of them suddenly ge their act together. Cause remember, a solid 70-ish% of their net worth isnt liquid assets So this would essentially force them to actually fear

yes but finland is notorious to match the fines to the wealth of the person, so a speeding ticket that would cost me 400 Euros would cost 250000 euros to a millionaire. A forest has no real value, it is irreplaceable so a few BILLION euros fine to google seems OK

Many big tech companies evaluate fines like a financial instrument, ignoring the spirit of law.

There’s a number of EU directives a development of this size engages with, EIA/Habitats/Birds & Water Framework Directives. A breach of any, by not waiting for full assessment means that the project can only proceed in exceptional circumstances only if they were unaware of breach

Finland should reverse permission to use the land. Then sue them. Then force them to replant every single tree.

Prison might actually be a deterrent for the people who decided to go ahead without permission. Can you see that happening though? I wish.

1. Finland has relative fines. Rich people pay bigger fines than poor people. Very basic thing. 2. Google didnt clear a forest without a permission. They were asked to halt because their water management plan wasn't fully realized yet. Forest cutting was legal
