The S&P 500 is 0.7% below a record high, yet 430 of those stocks are 21.7% below their highs. That means on average 86% of the stocks are in a bear market. Breadth has only been this bad twice, in January 1973 and in 1999/2000. On both occasions, the S&P then crashed nearly 50%

The New York Times told its readers in 1936 that Stalin's Moscow show trials were legitimate legal proceedings. Walter Duranty had already spent years laundering Soviet atrocities through the paper's pages, and the pattern held: the Times reported the confessions of Zinoviev, Kamenev, and fourteen other defendants as genuine admissions of guilt.
Every single defendant had been tortured. NKVD interrogators used sleep deprivation, beatings, and threats against family members to extract confessions to crimes that never happened. Zinoviev and Kamenev were shot in August 1936 within days of their sentencing.
Stalin bears responsibility. But so does a press institution that chose ideological sympathy over basic skepticism, and paid no price for that choice. The Times won a Pulitzer in 1932 partly on Duranty's work. It never returned that prize.
This is what state power without accountability produces: mass murder dressed up in courtroom procedure, and credentialed journalists applauding the costume. You are living with the downstream consequences of a media culture that learned it could cover for state violence and face no professional reckoning. The incentive was set then, and it has never fully reversed.

They shut down the Legislative Branch of the United States of America because I was outmaneuvering the Speaker to expose a global sex trafficking ring and impeach a rogue cabinet secretary.
It was the only way they could stop me.

Trump banned CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House, and is promising more fake news outlets to follow. But Trump likes fake news when it works to his advantage. When I spoke the truth about inflation, Trump threatened the Fox News booker to ensure I was not invited back.

“Europe is the home of innovation” is a curious boast when Europe is simultaneously trying to figure out why so much of its innovation gets commercialized and scaled elsewhere.
Subsidizing politically selected projects isn’t the same thing as creating an entrepreneurial environment. Entrepreneurs need freedom to experiment, invest, fail and succeed, not politicians taxing the economy, regulating it into submission, then handing some of the money back to favored projects and calling themselves the source of innovation.
Even the EU’s own competitiveness diagnosis admits regulatory barriers are helping drive innovative companies elsewhere. Maybe the entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t need to be “re-ignited” with government funding. Maybe government should stop smothering the flame.

At the next press conference, someone needs to ask Warsh if the conversation Trump described actually took place. Did Warsh discuss how the board wanted to raise rates but he did not, and did he only vote with the board after first getting permission from the president to do so?

I will be reacting live to today's Fed decision on The Claman Countdown on Fox Business immediately following the Warsh press conference. Even if the Fed hikes 50 basis points, it's too little, too late to derail the inflation train. You must get aboard the gold train. @LizClaman

BREAKING: The US deficit is now up to $1.97 trillion in the first 11 months of FY2026, the 4th-largest deficit at this point in the fiscal year in history.
This is already higher than the full-year FY2025 deficit of $1.78 trillion.
In August, the US Treasury's budget deficit technically fell -$178 billion YoY, or -51%, to $167 billion.
This comes as government outlays dropped -$162 billion YoY, to $527 billion, but the decline was largely due to a calendar shift, as August 1st fell on a Saturday, pushing Medicare and Social Security payments normally made on the first of the month into July.
However, adjusting for these payments, which account for some of the largest federal outlays, the monthly deficit rose +$7 billion YoY, to $248 billion, according to the US Treasury.
The US is on an unsustainable fiscal path.

Making his promise even worse, Trump referred to his $5,000 bribes as "dividends," as if his policies had been so successful that the U.S. now has surpluses to share. Instead, his reckless policies have produced massive deficits. Trump needs to send Americans bills, not checks.

Wrong.

The US money supply, measured by U.S. Divisia M4, is SURGING at 7.9%/yr. That's up from 5.4%/yr a year ago.
That same surge signal anticipated the inflation peak of 9.1% in June 2022. Most economists ignored money and failed to forecast the inflation surge in 2022.
THEY'RE IGNORING MONEY AGAIN, AND WILL MISS THE NEXT INFLATION SURGE.

This morning Trump proudly announced a deal to lower beef prices by reducing quotas and tariffs on imported beef. But that's also an admission that tariffs increased prices paid by American consumers. If removing tariffs lowers prices, then imposing them must have raised prices.
