a photo can show you what a place looks like. getting data that helps a robot understand that place is a different challenge.
that's the distinction that makes @vangrid_io worth following in the spatial data space.
robots and world models need more than images collected at random. they need useful views of real environments, from ground level details to how spaces are arranged and what has changed since the last capture.
Vangrid is building a network that lets people use ordinary phones to collect this kind of data on demand. a specific location gets requested, someone nearby records it, and faces and license plates are blurred on the device before the capture is uploaded.
the data is then fingerprinted and anchored on Base, giving buyers a way to verify its recorded details later.
there's an interesting connection in the background here too. CEO Robert Brighton has experience with Microsoft's Quantum Computing and HoloLens groups in Europe. HoloLens dealt with how digital systems interpret and interact with physical environments, a relevant area of experience for a network focused on real world spatial data.
but can crowdsourced captures become reliable enough for machines to use, not just people to view?
that will depend on data quality, coverage, freshness and verification as the network grows. collecting more footage alone won't solve those challenges.
Vangrid's web and Android apps have been live since july, so this is already moving beyond an idea on paper.
you can explore the network here:

1/4 EIP-7702 can turn the wallet itself into the sweeper.
A Binance-labeled wallet moved 167,464 ETH + 63 tokens, including 1.615B USDT, just 3m24s after a signed delegation was installed.
This is bad.

A surprise for the ones who were early.
We teamed up with our friends at @ensdomains to make something special. Only 25 exist, each one laser etched with your name.
Claims close tomorrow, at 8 PM IST. We'll hand them out at the House of HYPE on 3 Nov.

After six years in stealth, Atomic Machines is out. Our mission: on-demand, universal command of matter. First beachhead: the Matter Compiler, an AI-native manufacturing system that builds working micro-machines from code alone. No per-product tooling. No process development. Different code, different machine.

Evergreen storage: 360 TB of data and 13.8 billion years life.
—
University of Southampton have developed a technology that allows digital data to be stored virtually forever.
Using nanostructured glass, scientists at the University's Optoelectronics Research Center (ORC) have achieved such digital data recording and retrieval processes with so-called "5-dimensional" (5D) preservation: documents were recorded using an ultrafast laser, which produces extremely fast and intense pulses of light on three layers of dots, separated by 5 micrometers (a micrometer is one millionth of a meter).
A single disk can hold up to 360 TB (terabytes) of data, can withstand temperatures of up to 1000°C, and, at room temperature, can have a virtually unlimited lifespan (at 190°C it reaches 13.8 billion years).
As a form of stable and secure portable storage, the technology could be very useful for organisations with large archives, such as museums and libraries, to store large amounts of information. Professor Peter Kazansky, from the ORC, said of the discovery: “It is exciting to think that we have created a technology to preserve documents and information, capable of preserving it in space for future generations.
This technology could provide the last evidence of our civilisation: everything we have learned will not be forgotten.”

Your phone is useless without a company's permission. A twenty dollar board is not.
The firmware is Meshtastic. Open source, running on a cheap LoRa radio.
LoRa trades speed for distance. Messages cap out near 237 bytes, so text only. But the signal slips under the noise floor and keeps going. A few kilometers in a city. Tens with clear sky.
The records show the ceiling. 331 km ground to ground. One balloon packet landed 832 km away on 25 milliwatts, about forty times less power than your phone uses.
Then the mesh takes over. Every node relays, up to seven hops.
A battery lasts weeks. Add solar and it stops mattering. Encrypted by default, paired over Bluetooth, zero per month, no account, no number.
Hurricanes. Blackouts. Wildfires. Protests where coverage suddenly degrades.
Valleys nobody will ever cover, because there is no one there to bill.
Governments spend billions on resilient comms. Volunteers shipped a working version for the price of two coffees.
The physics was never the obstacle.
Nobody could work out how to bill you monthly for it.
