Putin is not a "humanitarian." Putin is a killer. Trump's pivot to help him and abandon Ukrainians is one of the worst U.S. policy decisions ever. It needs to be reversed. foreignaffairs.com/russia/pu… via @ForeignAffairs

A lack of spare parts for aircraft due to sanctions was a serious problem for Russia. Trump rushes to Putin’s rescue yet again, while Russia concedes nothing and continues to murder Ukrainian civilians.

The message to Russia should be simple: Negotiations start when Russia agrees to withdraw its forces from all of Ukraine, including Crimea. Until then, we continue to ramp up support for Ukraine. Anything else risks prolonging the conflict and bloodshed and, worse, enabling a Russian victory. The West's dithering and repeated offers of concessions to Russia fundamentally misread the situation. Putin has shown little interest in a peace that respects Ukrainian sovereignty. His ambitions are rooted in an imperial conception of Russian history, in which Ukraine is considered an inseparable part of a broader Russian civilization. He invokes the medieval state of Kyivan Rus' to justify these ambitions, ignoring the fact that Kyivan Rus' existed centuries before the Russian Empire and that Ukraine became an internationally recognized sovereign state in 1991. Crimea, moreover, was transferred from the Russian Soviet republic to the Ukrainian Soviet republic in 1954. Russia subsequently recognized Ukraine's existing borders following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, including through the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the 1997 Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership. Agreements with Russia mean little. Only a battlefield success (meaning Russia withdraws its forces) that makes clear the cost of renewing its adventurism will convince Russia.

A reminder that this war could be over tomorrow if Putin wanted to end it
So many people seem genuinely astonished by this local ceasefire in Oleshky, where Russian occupation and the fighting have driven the city into a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe. Turns out, all it takes is an order from the Kremlin, and Russians and Ukrainians stop shooting at each other. They can calmly and civilly arrange the evacuation of innocent civilians facing starvation, even allow Ukrainian and American journalists to be present on the ground, and so on. Well, duh. There is not, and never has been, a single adequate, rational, even remotely sane reason to wage a war aimed at destroying Ukraine. This is the stupidest, most brainless, absurd, pointless, contrived, and deceitful war in human history. The Kremlin wanted to give Donald Trump a little gift ahead of the elections, so the Kremlin gave an order to put the bloodbath on hold for a few dozen hours. All it would take is a single order from the Kremlin, and not only would a local ceasefire become possible, but the entire war would end. Just like that. Instantly. And 95% of Russians wouldn't give a single damn. They would happily accept absolutely anything as yet another "great victory of Russian arms," provided that's how state television explained it to them. And with a snap of the fingers, all those insane fairy tales about "NATO expansion," "Nazi Satanists," the "multipolar world," "historical Russian lands," and all the rest of that bullshit would simply vanish into thin air. The problem is that, in this insane, upside-down looking-glass world, absolutely everything is being done to encourage a megalomaniacal maniac, driven mad by impunity and boredom, to never, ever, under any circumstances stop the war, but to keep it going indefinitely. Instead, he is constantly appeased and rewarded for it.

Russian strikes on Ukraine today are truly horrific. A train station in Dnipro, downtown Chernihiv. A father crying over the body of his child. Children screaming for a dad who is now gone. And no reaction from the US, which is the most involved in making a "peace deal." Nothing from Trump at all. It creates such a scary, dangerous reality, one where russian oil refineries are protected, but Ukrainian children simply walking the streets of their cities are treated as fair targets. One where the aggression is supported and rewarded and the resistance is judged. I’m horrified by the world I find myself in. This is not how you make peace deals, this is how you betray your allies and throw them to the wolves.

So, Russia is working with the Houthis to target Saudi oil infrastructure and drive up world oil prices to help the Russian economy. And Trump is not helping the Saudis defend while also threatening to escalate his war--which also increases price of oil. It all helps Russia--funny that. understandingwar.org/researc…

To reach peace, Russia needs to be pressured much harder through increased military aid to Ukraine and stricter economic sanctions. Seizing and transferring Russia's frozen assets directly to Kyiv is the fastest and most impactful way to achieve this goal

There was indeed an Anchorage formula between Putin and Trump, and it was to involve the US forcing Ukraine to make major concession in land and people to Russian dictatorship, and in exchange we can only imagine the size of the payoffs….

There is hope:
In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump and his family have lost surprise elections, thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

Only Trump can save Putin. Europe should have stepped up support and weapons production long ago, and with urgency as soon as Trump was reelected. Whatever they need to spend now to defend Ukraine is a pittance compared to what they would be forced to spend if Putin advances.

Vladimir Putin is not our friend, and he is certainly no humanitarian. His relentless attacks on innocent civilians in Ukraine show his total disregard for human life. Appeasement won't end this war. Pressure will.

When you praise a mass murderer as a 'humanitarian,' you become complicit in his crimes. You insult the memory of the victims of the destruction of Grozny, Aleppo, Mariupol. You gaslight the women raped in Bucha. You mock the families of stolen Ukrainian children. You show that you share the same nihilistic universe as the perpetrator of these atrocities.

These are not transfers from the US, but from other countries. The US is now actively sabotaging Ukrainian defense of civilians.
Breaking news: The Trump administration has not approved the transfer of interceptor missiles to Ukraine that are needed to protect the country from Russian attacks, officials said, a delay that comes as President Trump has embraced Russia in recent weeks. wapo.st/4yCb7T7
