My own preferred Orthodoxy is Petrine Orthodoxy. This version has many elements congenial to Rome, Russia, Canterbury and Geneva ... and only a few I made up myself!

This reminds of a joke: A young priest asks a wise older priest, "What's the difference between the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?" The older priest says wearily, "Well, actually they have a lot in common. They were both founded by Spaniards, St. Dominic for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius of Loyola for the Jesuits. They were also both founded to combat heresy: the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to fight the Lutherans." The younger priest says, "I see. But where do the Jesuit and Dominican Orders really differ?" The older priest looks at him and says, "Well, have you met any Albigensians lately?"

When the liberal icon George McGovern left the senate he invested his savings into the purchase of a 150 room inn in Connecticut. It went under four years later. He wrote this letter to the WSJ about his experiences which should be required reading for every single MP and candidate.

🎬 Recorded in December 1964, this unforgettable two-minute performance was captured in one unedited take—no cuts, no tricks, just pure talent. Every note had to be perfect. Decades later, its raw authenticity remains captivating. ✨

The 79th edition of the New Zealand Cricket Almanack is available now. If you're looking at cricket records which will never be broken, put 44 consecutive editions of a cricket annual by the same editors at the top of your list. No one will even get close, see the following...

Over 40 Christians in Nigeria were killed in a surprise attack Friday October 23 by Islamic Jihadists, my sources tell me. Specifically, they attacked attacked a Christian community in Binnari, Karim Lamido, Taraba State, Nigeria. Islamic fundamentalists entered the village, shot residents as they tried to flee, burned homes, and destroyed food and harvests. Bodies were laid out for mass burial, according to eyewitness Dider Neza of Nigeria. Residents initially confirmed that over 40 people were killed, including many children. But a day after the attack, Dider tells me many died from injuries from the previous night. Others remain missing. Nigeria is burning and we all have to do something🙏

Is it too much to ask that the primary foci for our election are (a) policies (b) cost of policies (c) proposals [or not] to reduce the amount of interest gummint pays on debt by having a plan to reduce debt?

Our polls are interesting. I am no expert at interpreting them but I sense there is swinging within each of the centre-left and centre-right blocks (e.g. between Lab/Greens, Nat/NZF) *and* little or no swing between the blocks ...

Complicity in Slaughter: Outrage Explodes as Reports Link Musk and Trump to Ukraine Drone Shield Crippling Demands are rapidly intensifying for Donald Trump and far-right disinformation propagandist Elon Musk to face international war crimes charges following a catastrophic disruption to Ukraine's frontline defenses. A devastating exposé by The Telegraph, citing four anonymous sources, reveals a shocking level of complicity: it was Elon Musk who personally approached Donald Trump with the proposal to throttle Starshield — the military-grade version of his Starlink satellite network. Trump reportedly agreed to the scheme. By deliberately crippling Ukraine's drone defense systems, this calculated move effectively disabled the country's shield against Russian aggression. The sabotage directly allowed Vladimir Putin's forces to rain lethal drone strikes down upon undefended cities, resulting in the brutal slaughter of innocent Ukrainian men, women, and children. Critics and legal experts argue that by actively interfering with military infrastructure to benefit an invading, authoritarian Apparatchik force, both figures have crossed the line from political interference into direct complicity in war crimes.

I have chaired PhD vivas on the most esoteric and irrelevant subjects. Unpopular opinion I know, but ignorance of biblical literature and the theological history of ideas (irrespective of personal belief) turns most research in the Humanities into houses built on sand.
Angry but important - @HJoyceGender with wider thoughts higher education in the UK today following the Jason Arday affair. She and others were shocked to see some of what passes for scholarship today. (Also makes a reference to @CharlotteCGill ) ‘Arday’s plagiarism, and the poor quality of his individual work, are the least of what is so enraging about this story. The bigger problem is that he was part of a broader endeavour that made both him and others more stupid and useless. In a functioning market — one without government subsidies for useless qualifications and where the customers and end consumers’ interests were aligned — fields like the one Arday worked in would attract few or no students — perhaps the occasional eccentric with private means. Academia is supposed to be self-regulating, but the Arday affair shows that it really cannot be trusted. In a mawkish and condescending op-ed published in the Telegraph on August 19th, five days after Arday’s death, the vice-chancellor of Cambridge, Chris Smith, wrote: “Our former Senior Tutor at Pembroke College in Cambridge used to say in his speech to the incoming first-year students, on their first day: “You’re not here to learn to be clever; you’re here to learn to be kind.” We should all perhaps reflect on that message, in the aftermath of the tragedy of Jason Arday.” Honestly, what does he think Cambridge is — a pre-school? What does he think universities are for? Kindness is taught by example, and largely before children turn 18. And no institution can have more than one purpose. If they try to add another, they will inevitably lose sight of the original one and end up with none. For universities, that purpose is supposed to be the pursuit of knowledge, not “kindness”. Pursuing knowledge will sometimes be unkind. When academics who commit plagiarism and departments who appoint incompetents for base reasons such as politics are revealed in public and shamed, it will feel “unkind”. And more generally, free inquiry will sometimes turn up inconvenient, unwanted and actively hurtful truths. A university that thinks kindness is more important than those truths is not worthy of the name.’ open.substack.com/pub/helenj…
