The only thing that would sway my vote this election is six text messages from an unidentified number during my work day.

MCR IF THEY WERE AI GENERATED: It’s not just a fashion statement — it’s a deathwish. And honestly? That’s rare.

It's not enough we just had that mess with ao3.life now we have another one targeting specifically black creators from ao3. I've found 3 of my usernames and fics I'd orphaned or put on private on this site.

I'm an author who has several dozen fics on AO3 lmao. I've been on there for like a decade now. Reader feedback is great but nobody is entitled to it, me included, and people privately archiving my stories are not robbing me of that. Get a grip.

NO ONE is talking about profit, authors want to >>TALK TO THEIR READERS<<about things they love. About how they view characters, about what they liked in our writing. It's literally the most human thing EVER. The way you ppl misinterprete authors as attention gluttons is PITIFUL

for anyone struggling with the whole “fanfic writers don’t own their works” concept, i strongly suggest reading this legal article, which explores the blurred lines between copyright infringement, derivative works, and the rights fanfiction writers may hold over their own original contributions. there is a fundamental difference between owning the intellectual property your work is based on and holding rights to the original writing you’ve created. fanfiction writers do not own the characters or worlds they borrow, but that does not automatically mean their own creative contributions are devoid of copyright protection. the distinction matters. digitalcommons.lmu.edu/cgi/v…

I'm realizing way to many people went into writing fanfiction thinking it worked like influencers and content creation. Fanfiction is for fun. Not attention, not engagement, not for profit. It's for love a piece of media enough to write your own twist and if people like it cool.

so my shit is on here and yours probably is too if you've published to ao3. they are republishing in multiple formats and using AI to turn fics into audiobooks that they then make profit off of if people choose to buy we got rid of the guillotine too soon
In light of recent ao3 related events, I have stumbled upon a website that I think authors need to be made aware of.  The website ao3 [DOT] life has been scraping and downloading fics published to ao3 for who knows how long. 🧵

I know this tweet is well-intentioned but regret & shame are very poor motivators. I'd guess tweets like this drive people to be less happy (and therefore more addicted) rather than more happy & less addicted
In 50 years, one of the most common deathbed regrets will be “I wasted my life on short-form videos” and the darkest part is they won’t even remember a single one

Nobody owes anyone anything but if you’re not a writer and you feel the absence of ao3 in this outage it is worth considering how you can put yourself out there and participate in the dialog fic writers are trying to have with others.

There are so many bad takes about fanfic coming from all sides right now, and it's driving me NUTS. My takes: 1) The purpose of AO3/OTW is to archive fanworks/keep them from disappearing. If you're filing DMCA notices for shared credited works, you never understood the mission.
