From fuelling armed conflicts to contributing to violence and insecurity, illicit firearms put lives at risk worldwide.
At #UNTOC2026, UNODC explores how stronger investigations, firearms tracing and international cooperation can help enforce UN arms embargoes.
At #UNTOC2026 in Vienna, RECSA Executive Secretary Mr. Jean-Pierre Betindji joined a @UNODC side event on strengthening implementation of UN arms embargoes through the Firearms Protocol and criminal justice responses.
He underscored the need to link weapons and ammunition management with criminal justice: effective marking, record-keeping and tracing can turn recovered weapons into evidence, identify diversion points, and help uncover illicit trafficking networks.
RECSAโs message: Mark it. Record it. Trace it. Prosecute it.
RECSA remains committed to working with Member States, UNODC and partners to strengthen accountability, prevent diversion and counter illicit arms trafficking across the region.

Every year, countless lives are lost to organized crime.
That's why countries are joining forces to strengthen the global response and protect those most at risk.
๐RECSA Executive Secretary, Mr. Jean Pierre Betindji is attending the 13th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
As States seek to address how to close the gaps criminal networks exploit, disrupt their operations and strengthen cooperation, for RECSA, part of the solution is stopping the illicit flow of small arms and light weapons.
RECSAโs mandate under the Nairobi Protocol supports UNTOC and its Firearms Protocol in three ways:
๐น Closing gaps: harmonising national firearms laws and controls
๐น Disrupting operations: marking, record-keeping, tracing and secure stockpile management
๐น Strengthening cooperation: regional information sharing, cross-border coordination and law enforcement capacity-building
