NORTH CAROLINA EXPANDS ARTIFICIAL REEF PROGRAM: Watch as North Carolina's Artificial Reef Program deploys 360 reef balls at AR-197, an estuarine reef located about 1.7 miles north of Roanoke Island. The new structures will help enhance marine habitat and provide fishing opportunities for anglers targeting red drum, striped bass and speckled trout.

The living shoreline is taking shape at Bishop Point Park! 🌱
Construction is underway, and the reef balls are now in place. These structures will help create habitat for marine life while helping reduce wave energy along the shoreline. As this project continues to take shape, Bishop Point Park is one step closer to a more resilient shoreline that benefits both wildlife and the community, including those who enjoy fishing along our coast.
So, what’s next? Native vegetation will be added to help stabilize the soil, reduce erosion and provide habitat for local wildlife. Together, these natural features will support a healthier coastal ecosystem, creating more opportunities for fish and other marine species to thrive in the area.
And this is just the beginning! More living shoreline projects are coming to Manatee County. Stay tuned for updates as we continue working with nature to protect our local shorelines

133 tons of new habitat are now beneath the surface! 🐠
This month, Manatee County deployed 56 artificial reef balls at Bridge Reef, adding 266,000 pounds (133 tons) of new habitat for marine life. Each reef ball weighs between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds and will provide shelter, feeding areas and nursery habitat for fish and other marine species for years to come.
This project was funded through the 2025–2026 Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Artificial Reef Construction Grant, awarded in early 2026. The reef balls were supplied by Reef Innovations and deployed offshore by O'Sullivan Marine's Galway Girl.
While Manatee County has been building artificial reefs since the 1960s, this marks the 10th deployment at Bridge Reef since the site was established in 2020, continuing to strengthen our local marine ecosystem and recreational fishing opportunities.
