Started a Substack on economic theory, India and economic development, and AI and society. The threads turn on choices, institutions, and what technology is doing in between. First post is a short note on what each will hold.

Very excited for this magnum opus on the economic history of India— the great ideas and people that shaped it. @CafeEconomics has been a remarkable mentor and guide to so many restless young souls hoping to find their voice... It is but natural that we celebrate the enabler, and his work on a subject where his expertise is second to none.
ps: If someone is traveling from India to the East Coast in the next few weeks, pls get me a copy!
This is a beautiful piece of theory. Congrats Henrique (@smorgasborb), Yuhta (@YuhtaIshii), and Xiao (@xiaolin_econ). You have two pieces of information that can help inform a decision but you don't know how those two sources are correlated. How should use that information?
In their new paper, @smorgasborb, @xiaolin_econ, & Ishii tackle an important question: How should we make decisions using multiple information sources when we don't know their correlation?

Very happy to share a new paper, “Technology Bottlenecks: Measuring Where AI Could Raise the Value of Work It Cannot Yet Do.”
AI exposure measures ask about the work AI is capable of doing. We ask instead where the marginal value of work AI cannot yet do may rise as AI speeds up the rest of the job.
To do so, we employ 288 million U.S. job postings mapped line by line to their closest O*NET tasks and GPT-4 feasibility ratings from Eloundou et al. (2024) to construct a measure, “bottleneck pressure,” for each task in each occupation that posts it.
Using a simple task-based framework, we derive this pressure at the task level, showing that for an AI-infeasible task it is the exposure of the occupation that posts it, so the same task can face very different bottleneck pressure in different jobs.
Reporting bottleneck pressure alongside AI exposure shows both the scope for AI to perform work and where improving the work it cannot do may pay off more as capabilities expand.

Big announcement to the Labor Econ Community: We have created the "Labor Hub" - a platform to exchange relevant info (events, jobs, visits, SI, papers...) - Apply to become a member! Job market candidates especially encouraged to apply! Link: laborhub.ilr.cornell.edu/ Please share!
Mohandas Gandhi turns 157 today. The more they hate him (on the left and right) the bigger he will emerge, almost like a deep idea that keeps giving. A man nowhere near perfect, but brave enough to think out loud his imperfections, a man wedded to ideals and willing to experiment and update them, a man arguably conscious about his place in history yet always in tune with the pulse of the awam.
In the era of outrage and judgement, Orwell sums it up well: "... but regarded simply as a politician, and compared with the other leading political figures of our time, how clean a smell he has managed to leave behind."
Happy birthday Bapu!

ये बड़ा जानवर है। ये आपके छोटे पिंजरे में नहीं समाएगा। ये अपनी दुनिया बनाएगा।
Ye bada jaanwar hai, aapke chhote pinjre mein nahin samayega, apni duniya banayega.
He is a great beast, this one. Your small cage will hold him. He’ll weave a world of his own.
Happy birthday RK!
Yay for research at the intersection of technology and institutions. Modern societies built institutions to convert stunning but still fallible human cognition into trustworthy judgment. Think government, religion, markets. But how does the arrival of the new actor, Mr./Mrs. AI (AGI if you will), with its own learning and powerful blackbox thinking, upend or at least challenge, these structures? Good luck to @alexolegimas and @JulianDJacobs and their team. Also exciting time to be an economic theorist.
Today we are announcing the new DeepMind Institute, a forum dedicated to interdisciplinary, evidence-led debate on the societal and economic questions surrounding AGI.
As part of the launch, @JulianDJacobs and I have a new essay and working paper: “Economic Policy for AGI.”

I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks.
Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

The news today of progress on resolving the Navier–Stokes problem, one of mathematics’ great longstanding challenges concerning the equations that govern the flow of fluids, represents a milestone advance in human knowledge. This story began with Navier, Stokes, Leray, and Ladyzhenskaya and has culminated in the recent breakthroughs of Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa, then — assisted by new technologies — Alpöge and Buckmaster, with the final steps taken by OpenAI mathematicians. The purpose of mathematics is human understanding, and this achievement, and the process that led to it, will bear fruit for a long time to come.

Very excited for this forthcoming book. It is a deeply important work of economic theory. Had the privilege of reading early drafts. Recommend to all economists, esp PhD students. Put this on your reading lists for the spring semester. Many congrats @tyfn_sonmez 🤓.
Diary entry on his budday! One of my favorite sholakas… the linguistic cadence combined with the weight of what is being said… pure artistry.

We develop a mechanism design framework for AI alignment and control: arxiv.org/abs/2609.01595
It’s largely conceptual but we offer stylized applications to failure modes (sandbagging, alignment faking), safety practice (scalable oversight, peer prediction), and a way to think about the value of alignment, interpretability, capability, and control.
Our paper Pricing with Algorithms appears in current issue of AER: Insights. Through a simple model it illustrates how temporary commitment & quickness of response afforded by algorithms could lead to collusive outcomes, which seems outside the scope of current anti-trust laws.
