This is why I love this man.
He captures the soul, if you will, of the scientist better than anyone else I know of.

In 1994, Jeff Bezos famously spotted a stat that made him leave his high-paying PE job to start Amazon:
💡 The Internet was growing 2300% per year.
What are the generation-defining stats of today?
I'll post a few to kick things off...

I'm back from a week at my mom's house and now I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand, the brand I've been putting in my mouth for a week. We never talked about this brand or googled it or anything like that.
As a privacy tech worker, let me explain why this is happening. 🧵

I've been part of building multiple software groups, most of them based on some version of "find the smartest people".
It's a horrible and toxic idea.
The past five years my ambition has been "build the kindest tech group".
That has led not only to smarts, but resilience.

I've heard the phrase, "We don't need a tech lead", from a number of engineers in my career. My response to this 👇

If someone is speaking to you in a foreign accent they are smart enough to know at least 2 languages - and were brave enough to do their job in their second. It’s so easy to condescend, assume and patronise when all they deserve is your respect and your humility

Britain still faces serious shortages of imported food, with supplies from Europe totally cut off & Atlantic shipping threatened. UK governments urges "grow your own food" on newly ploughed gardens, fields & parks.
Wow. This is pretty amazing. Thanks @jezhumble!

Australians have watched with growing anger at what the Murdoch media monopoly is doing to our country. A cancer on democracy.
Today I am launching a national petition to establish a #MurdochRoyalCommission.

In 20 years of playing this game, I see a massive correlation between code that is unit-testable and well-designed. It might be an accidental or genuine correlation. It doesn't matter.
To me, writing testable code is the laziest (i.e., most efficient) way to design code well.
That’s a wheelie good idea
Lockdown wheelie project! My super talented friend and work mate David Colls takes his job of playing with data wheely seriously. So lucky to work with these amazing people. medium.com/@david.colls/the-…

Disappointing to see an MP share something so disrespectful
In Victoria with control freak wowsers like Dictator Dan running the show, you can’t even sit down for a coffee, let alone a beer. Our Premier is such a friendless loser, of course Victoria has no plans to reopen licensed venues, who would invite Lurch for a drink?#danhasnomates

Microsoft President @BradSmi: "Microsoft was on the wrong side of history when open source exploded at the beginning of the century and I can say that about me personally. The good news is that, if life is long enough, you can learn … that you need to change."
Am sure folk seeing the first car or plane in the wild would also have felt unsettled so can’t decide between disturbing or progress. Having said that, making it look like an imperial walker feels like a questionable design choice!
One of the creepiest and most dystopian things I've seen since the pandemic began: a terrifying camera-equipped remote-controlled robot patrols Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in Singapore to -- for now -- warn about social distancing. Look at the fear. Story: straitstimes.com/singapore/r…
