My first postdoc paper! Reviewing the latest single-cell discoveries from the hypothalamus and our ongoing efforts to understand such a complex and important brain region 🧠🧬
Delighted to share our open-access review with @sciencesheri & @GilesYeo on hypothalamic feeding circuits—how single-cell, spatial and 3D atlases link cellular identity to function. @IMS_MRL #hypothalamus #singlecell link.springer.com/article/10…

I am excited to share our latest paper @Nature where we construct a hi-res spatial map of the human hypothalamus, the brain region central in appetite control. It is a collaboration between @IMS_MRL @Cambridge_Uni & @MPI_Metabolism

A protocol to study cis-regulatory effects of GWAS variants on specific gene promoters via luciferase assay. We used human primary astrocytes but it can be easily adapted for any cell type. I hope others find it useful! 🧫🧬 @STRUANGRANT @STARProtocols sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

It took me SEVEN years to figure out that you can save a ggplot as a vectorized .svg file ggsave("file.svg"). The svg file can be opened on powerpoint and it will be completely vectorized, even text are still recognized as text boxes! No more recreating plots on illustrator!!!!!

WE WON! This week, over 2000 Penn grad workers cast ballots. After eligible votes were tallied, the final count was 1807 to 97. It's official. The majority of eligible voters turned out to the polls. Penn graduate workers have resoundingly declared: WE WANT A UNION AT PENN!

Variant-to-function analysis of the childhood obesity chr12q13 locus implicates rs7132908 as a causal variant within the 3′ UTR of FAIM2 dlvr.it/T6Kr1x
My functional validation of a causal variant at the FAIM2 obesity GWAS locus is out today in @CellGenomics! (1/4) cell.com/cell-genomics/fullt…
Our hypothesis is that FAIM2 is required for normal appetite-suppressing neuron development/survival during childhood and decreased FAIM2 contributes to increased obesity risk at a young age (3/4)
I’m so proud of this challenging work and must thank many contributors including @STRUANGRANT @pahlmc @AlessandraChesi @kieonacook and amazing core facilities at @PennMedicine and @CHOP_Research (4/4)

👇Our new findings out in @NatureGenet today, where we report 2 new genes linked to adult-onset obesity. In particular, variation in Bassoon results in the largest effect on body-weight seen at the population level to date! #genetics #obesity #obesityisnotachoice
Rare gene variants identified by @ZhaoDylan and @The_MRC colleagues have the largest impacts on obesity risk discovered to date.
The BSN & APBA1 variants are among the first for which increased risk of obesity isn't observed until adulthood.

NEWS&VIEWS | @sciencesheri & @STRUANGRANT (@PennMedicine)
The authors discuss work on how increased milk intake modifies both gut bacterial abundances & circulating metabolites in favor of decreasing the risk of T2D in lactase-deficient individuals.

I recently had the opportunity to write my first News & Views with @STRUANGRANT! Here we discuss an accompanying article by Luo et al. that found links between lactase deficiency, milk intake and T2D risk: rdcu.be/dwEKn
