Even if somehow this doesn't wind up as a forever war, it'll remain a pointless war.
JD Vance defends Trump's war of choice against Iran on the grounds that we've only been at war for 7 months so it's not fair to call it a "forever war"

The US response to my UN report fails to refute any of my legal findings that the US has murdered 244 civilians at sea. Instead it resorts to childish name-calling. I’m obviously not a terrorist sympathizer - but the US is committing extrajudicial killings ohchr.org/sites/default/file

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

US is now rushing in Thaad and other Air defenses to Israel in prep for Iran operations. 5+ supply flights to Israel yesterday, multiple today. Many of them are coming from Texas around Fort Bliss.
Lots of USAF planes leaving the middle east today. Not really seeing volume going towards the middle east.

An incredibly detailed piece that should be read in its entirety. One point stands out to me: The shadow economy described in this piece is, in a sense, Iran's real economy, as it is how the country's governing elite manage their wealth, distribute patronage, arm and supply the IRGC and other military/security bodies, and maintain connections to the global economy through intermediaries. This underscores the thesis that broad economic pressure--while very damaging to Iran's civilian economy and to the Iranian people as a whole--is less effective at pressuring the regime or those who profit from it continuing to remain in power. reuters.com/world/iran/irans

Trump is reportedly planning to restart war with Iran after the election. Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation.

The relentless racism oozing out of Trump and his cult is something I never thought I’d see in the United States of America. It’s devastating beyond words. As the proud daughter of Iranian immigrants, this country welcomed my parents and offered freedom and opportunity we never could have otherwise imagined. That’s why to this day, my dad is the most patriotic American I know. He loves this country so much. I hope we all keep fighting for an America where that dream is still possible for the next generation. It starts by defeating this grotesque cult once and for all.
Trump: "He said, 'Why does he keep calling me Muhammed? I said, you know why? Because I'm president of the United States. I can call you whatever the hell I want."

With the usual caveat that nothing Trump says means much, and that nothing he does follows a clear logic, signs increasingly are pointing to renewed US/Israeli strikes on Iran. The US can ensure the war will be intense. It can't ensure it will be short. And Iran will have every incentive to make it as long and painful as possible.

Neither bloc can form a government, and Netanyahu stays in office while everyone tries: 1) Netanyahu has no realistic route to 61. His bloc is the four religious-right parties plus Likud, and every party outside it ran on replacing him. To get there he would need defectors from Bennett or Lieberman, which both ruled out, or Ra’am, which Smotrich and Ben-Gvir would veto. 2) Eisenkot’s only path to a government runs through the Arab parties. Ra’am alone gets him to 58. He needs the Joint List as well, at least abstaining or giving outside support. That is the 2021 Bennett-Lapid model, but with a bigger dependency. Bennett and Lieberman have both been wary of relying on the Joint List. 3) The other way out is the Haredim. Shas plus UTJ is 14 seats, which would put Eisenkot at 66. But the draft is the issue that defines Lieberman, Bennett and the Democrats. A deal on exemptions would break his bloc from the inside. 4) The anti-Netanyahu parties plus the Arab parties come to about 69. That is enough to elect the Knesset speaker, control committees, and pass laws without forming a government. A bill barring an indicted MK from forming a government becomes possible. 5) Likud’s overperformance is mostly cannibalization. Likud gained, but its bloc is at 50. The votes came from inside the right, not from the center. 6) Stalemate favors Netanyahu. He stays caretaker PM through coalition talks and any repeat election. If nobody gets to 61, he governs by default. The likeliest outcomes are a Bennett-Lapid-style government that depends on Arab support, or deadlock and another election with Netanyahu still in charge. The whole question is whether Eisenkot, Bennett and Lieberman will sit with Arab support. Exit polls here usually miss by a seat or two per party, so a small shift around the threshold could change the math.

That American citizens are significantly less likely to receive disaster relief if they live in states that didn't vote for the regime in power should be treated as a major scandal.
Seven months ago, there was a big conversation about whether Trump was denying blue states FEMA aid for partisan reasons. Since May, there have been 57 more disaster relief decisions. Requests from blue states are still 2.8x more likely to be rejected than from red states.
