見知らぬ誰かの一杯を、先に払っておく文化がある。
ナポリのカフェ・ソスペーゾ。ソスペーゾは、宙づりの、という意味だ。コーヒーを1杯飲んで、2杯分払う。余った1杯は店に保留され、あとから来た、財布の厳しい誰かが、ソスペーゾはありますか、と尋ねて飲む。
20世紀初頭のナポリの労働者たちに根づいた習慣で、経済危機を機に復活し、いまでは保留コーヒーとして世界に広がった。日本でも取り入れるカフェが少しずつ現れている。
設計の妙は、匿名にある。払った人は、誰が飲むかを知らない。飲む人は、誰が払ったかを知らない。施す顔と、施される顔が、永遠に出会わない。だから受け取る側の尊厳が削れないし、払う側も善意を誇示できない。
寄付の一番の障害は、お金ではなく、気まずさだ。それをコーヒー1杯の値段と、宙づりという時間差が解いてしまった。
100年前のナポリの発明は、優しさの動線設計として、いまだに世界最高水準だと思う。

About #celldivision #footage and why it matters and why we even perceive it as #beautiful and #impressive.
#Processes that are highly #complex in detail often have a strangely calming effect when observed as a visual sequence of clearly #recognizable #morphologicalchanges. Why is this? While nature’s mechanisms represent flexible adaptations to environmental conditions, they biochemically follow prescribed, obligatory sequences dictated by #evolution and the laws of #physics. These processes repeat themselves, consistently adhering to a range of the same series of molecular patterns. This is true of cell division, which is presented here, using confocal #microscopy, in impressive detail and high resolution; the footage captures the process in #timelapse, revealing a seemingly rhythmic, recurring mechanism. Cell division is one of the most fundamental processes of life, and it is indeed beautiful to watch.
Without cell division, organisms could neither #grow nor #develop; longevity through #regeneration and #selfhealing would be impossible; #reproduction could not occur; and evolution itself would not exist.
The striking time-lapse footage allows the stages of cell division to seemingly flow seamlessly into one another. Although the underlying molecular-morphological changes are often incomprehensible or beyond the grasp of many, this footage presents the process as a #cohesivewhole that is easily accessible to any viewer, an #aesthetically and #artistically appealing display that evokes a sense of wonder.
