¡a 2023 update!: ack! it's finally out, 2+ years in the making working with @JoeyBernhardt @mioconnor and @sbfey !! we meta-analysed 75 studies to understand how thermal variability affects biological responses royalsocietypublishing.org/d…
i made this for my MIZ students this week to boost morale (i think it worked) @BamfieldMSC

Out today in @NatureBiotech! PhD students & postdocs: there's a trick – overlooked and underused – for having new ideas in the creative process. Talk science 1 on 1 with a science buddy that you trust and think of it as an improvisation. nature.com/articles/s41587-0……

academics anonymous: every time i have to ask for a letter of recommendation for some amount of funding, i feel like a lil schoolgirl asking for a gold star on the good behaviour chart

We've lost more than a person.
Sinéad O'Connor's art, what she stood for, and how she stood for it, changed so much for so many people.
I'm devastated by her loss, and holding on to her lessons.

Desolation Sound covers 85 square kilometres and welcomes 250,000 annual visitors.
It’s also home to over 90 archaeological sites —including burial sites — important to the Tla’amin Nation.

Student researchers have helped make UBC an academic juggernaut. But they say they have dismal pay, unpredictable hours and little protection against harassment. The school is now trying to block their union bid by arguing they aren't actually workers.

today i unlocked a new academic chakra:
you can blast send copy + paste emails from outlook by dragging highlighted text between email windows, using [command n] to draft a new email, and [command enter] to send an email

current expectations of grad students: publish revolutionary science, graduate on time, make no mistakes, question nothing, give back to the community + advocate for better pay (all while living below the poverty line) -> this is not sustainable or attainable #supportourscience

I found NSERC's letter for my PhD fellowship in 1980! I got $8500/year. To keep up with inflation, NSERC would have needed to raise fellowships to $20,572 by 2003, which they did! Good job!
But notice what has happened since 2003...
@SupportOurSci
me: having a conversation with my dad about life
my dad: abruptly drops off the line and is unreachable
also my dad: sends me an email with the subject line: “Phone Lost Charge & I dropped off call”
went to @BamfieldMSC to find the meaning of life and instead, it found me
email of the day
subject line: milk
objective: how many ecologists does it take to deliver milk?
result: 3
that's right, you heard it here first: it takes 3 ecologists to deliver milk. i'll take my crafoord prize now
