Elite schools and universities: stop worrying about creating "global citizens" and start worrying about creating American ones.

I was recently on a panel discussing A.I. and the Humanities. My co-panelist advocated for the Humanities as teaching empathy, by which he meant a global perspective. So I took an anti-empathy stance (no surprise there).
I did that partly for patriotic reasons, as "global perspectives" typically, and quietly, facilitate the transformation of us from embedded human beings into "individuals" amenable to institutional governance. We can be cast about the economy and the state more readily thereby, with little to no benefit to the far-away people we're supposed to be helping. And the question of the good life and the healthy community? An answer assumed, it is never raised.
Besides eroding patriotism, it also guts the core of humanistic education, which is the civilization and discipline of the human mind, traditionally through the seven liberal arts. It teaches us how to think well about the nature of all things, on one hand, and speak well, whether to the community of the learned or to the wider community of one's compatriots, on the other. At the top end, philosophy; at the lower end, rhetoric and poetry.
At a time of deep political discord, where people feel neglected by their government, where they believe it serves foreign or special interests rather than their own, restructuring the Humanities along the ends of liberal and civic education seems indispensable.
Our politics needs fewer global citizens, that much at least is clear.

American universities have a duty to prioritize the needs of America. The education and formation of American citizens should be an essential and explicit part of their mission.
And the same holds for schools.

Why have there been so few famous female philosophers? And why have even fewer of them been mothers?

get in loser we're getting blackout drunk and robbing a bank
Choosing to have a drink is not consent, and it’s never a license for sexual assault.
New York law should reflect that.
I support closing the voluntary intoxication loophole and will work with the Legislature to get it done.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
There is no law in New York saying choosing to drink means consenting to sex.
Current New York law says voluntary intoxication does not invalidate an individual's ability to give consent, as it does not meet the state's standard of "mentally incapacitated".

I sense excessive AI alarmism from conservatives who don’t believe in God—from those who want to conserve our old world without believing in the world to come. Those of us who believe in God may hate much about AI (I do!) but ultimately see the whole project as akin to Babel.

Only far-right people could seriously believe this was likely terrorism. The New York Times finest sources understand that it was probably just an innocent stab-the-pilot kill-the-Israelis suicide attempt.

Another reminder that the Israelis are the good guys
For the first time in over 20 years, someone has tried to hijack a plane bound for Israel. Miraculously, the attacker, an Omani pilot, was overpowered before he could complete his mission.
How a dramatic hijacking was foiled by the bravery of everyday Israelis.

"...we must recognize how the elective curriculum shapes students’ souls: It encourages the young to view themselves as customers, who have no way of judging value beyond the criterion of mere popularity."

As I always say, UK universities are about ten years behind American universities on this crap (except on the trans crap, where they’ve been about five years ahead). So right now in the UK it’s Fall 2016. An ominous time.
Have just received an astonishing, and very detailed, statement from an esteemed lecturer at Oxbridge. Goes into significant detail about the way that, in this lecturer’s view, their institution has been gripped by deeply illiberal woke dogma. I will be releasing the full thing soon.
Among other things, it includes claims that:
• students are having ideologically-driven conclusions pushed on them
•universities as a whole are hiring people not based on academic excellence but on their conformity with woke zeitgeists and their immutable characteristics
•DEI-style hiring practices are so ubiquitious across the university sector as to essentially amount to a form of discrimination
•Unrigorous, activist-style research and behaviour is commonplace among academics
And much more.
Genuinely quite staggering to read, even though none of it is in any way surprising.
I will be post it soon as part of my efforts to expose and highlight the way that universities are laundering progressive activism through the academy.
