🚨 BREAKING: Japan's top LNG carrier financiers given 30 days to respond to calls for proper environmental and social due diligence on $1.77 billion in LNG carrier financing exposure.
Japanese financial institutions financed nearly 27% of global LNG carrier project finance between 2020 and 2025. Now 33 civil society groups are demanding accountability.
On September 2, SFOC and 32 co-signatories including @FoEJapan_en, Kiko Network, Jubilee Australia Research Centre, and @standearth sent a joint letter to 34 Japanese financial institutions identified as among the world’s largest financiers of LNG carriers.
🚢 @mufgbk_official, SMFG, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust, @Mizuho, and Yamaguchi Financial Group provided $1.77B (26.9%) of all global project-level carrier finance between 2020-2025. MUFG alone accounts for 12.8%, making it the single largest LNG carrier financier in the world.
These vessels operate in some of the world’s most ecologically sensitive waters, including the Coral Triangle, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mozambique Channel, and the Strait of Hormuz, without vessel-level environmental due diligence. SFOC’s research estimates the Japanese-financed fleet enables approximately 2,084 MtCO₂e in annual lifecycle emissions—roughly a third of total US emissions.
📣 The letter calls on these institutions to:
- Require environmental and social due diligence for LNG carrier financing
- Recognize LNG carriers’ cumulative ecological impacts despite being movable assets
- Exclude LNG carriers from green and transition finance taxonomies
- Assess financing against projected LNG carrier oversupply through 2030
Disclose whether financing includes vessels serving Mozambique LNG
The 34 institutions have 30 days to respond.

The climate crisis is a public health crisis.
Demand bold, climate action for a #JustTransition to a future powered by renewables.
Thousands more Americans are dying from extreme heat than the government's official tally, according to NPR and Boston University.
The CDC count has ranged from about 700-2,500 in recent years. But NPR's model estimated the real number has been between 7,000-10,700.
Climate change and extreme heat appear to be taking many, many more lives than previously estimated.

🚨BREAKING 🌊🌡📈
Both the @NOAA and @CopernicusECMWF datasets show record high global Sea Surface Temperatures!
Paleoclimate evidence shows that these temperatures could be higher than any time in the past hundreds of thousands of years!
Replying to @LeonSimons8
"The global mean annual values [during the Eemian] were ∼0.5°C warmer than they were 150 years ago and indistinguishable from the 1995–2014 mean"
Global Sea Surface Temperatures were about another 0.5°C higher in 2024:
