Helen Branswell was the most prescient reporter on Covid, and a wonderful colleague and friend. This video she recorded in late summer is an inspiration to us all.
Last night, STAT's Executive Editor Rick Berke accepted, in memory of Helen Branswell, the Kovler Prize for Trust in Life Science Journalism.
Watch this video that Helen recorded in late summer to accept the award.
We miss you, Helen.

Two reporters did what has eluded so many others: penetrating the behemoth that is Epic
“It’s very clear Epic owns the market. Its prices are extraordinary. It has killed innovators left and right — it’s time for a change.” A must-read story from Casey Ross and @brittanytrang, who are investigating the electronic health records giant Epic. statnews.com/2026/10/28/epic…

RFK Jr. is making his closing argument to Americans ahead of the midterms election: Vote Republican and we'll Make America Healthy Again, stick with changing vaccine policy, and crack down on fraud (which, in turn, will lower costs, he says). My latest: statnews.com/2026/10/29/rfk-…

"[I]t’s ironic to hear a guy who’s trafficked in eugenicist terms, who rejects science outright ... lecture voters about an Arab American scientist with two doctoral degrees who believes in science, like vaccines.”

Epic's control over access to hospitals' health data means that it is picking and choosing winners in health tech and AI, and can throttle access to those it deems unworthy, or competitive with its own products. statnews.com/2026/10/28/epic…

I spoke with Moderna $MRNA CEO Stéphane Bancel about intismeran and what's next for the cancer vaccine and the biotech he runs.
"We know the clinical impact in the Phase 3 study is real and big, so we need to go and be aggressive. We need to explore the biology. There will be some risk, because it’s not going to work everywhere."

So all the discussion here on X has led me to think -- quite a bit! -- about the new film.
And here is where I landed. The film is, indeed, brilliant. I loved the movie. But I hated myself — and everyone else — for loving it, because I felt like that love demonstrated exactly why Holmes can seem to have such an eerie power over people.
So here's why I wish you didn’t want to see Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary
TLDR: Movie is great, humans suck.

So @TylerShultz_ as a Theranos whistleblower. And he wrote the piece you need to read about ‘You Can See Everything.’
Elizabeth Holmes is still lying, he says. And the filmmakers, while creating a great piece of art, fall short on looking outside the walls of her apartment to document that.
One key detail: "My wife had to squeeze my arm to prevent me from jumping out of my seat in the theater and screaming, THAT IS NOT THE DEVICE."
Again, that device Holmes showed? It's not the one we're talking about!!!!
Having seen the film, I basically agree with Tyler's take.

If you care about biotech and drug development watch this interview with Matt Gline, the CEO of Roivant, a biotech firm that is now worth $24 billion.
He talks about why he thinks predictions about AI from people like Anthropic’s Dario Amodei are overly optimistic.
“If Dario is right and I'm wrong, and he cures every disease in five years, man, are we all the winners from that outcome,” Gline said.
“I think if you work in this industry, it is very hard not to be skeptical of any of those claims. Because, and I've said this in other settings recently too, biotech is a wood chipper that like is built to like ingest souls and shred them. It's just like such a hard business that like someone comes and they're like, oh, but I've built a computer and I'm going to push a button and all of that goes away and it just works. Like that is probably not the way that's going to go.”
