Worshipping in a synagogue is not tainted by racism. From this moment, voting for the Green Party of England and Wales is economist.com/leaders/2026/1…

Sad to see Jewish people being forced to resign their membership of any political party - shows how far away from the mainstream the @TheGreenParty has moved. It’s up to all Green Party elected politicians to make their position on this motion clear.

I have officially resigned from the Green Party and will currently sit as an independent Cllr A statement to the people of Waterloo Today I have made the incredibly difficult decision to resign from the Green Party. As things stand, I will now sit as an Independent councillor for Waterloo. I'm 23. I grew up here, walked these streets as a little boy and couldn't be prouder to now represent the community I call home. I didn't get into politics for a career or a party badge. I got into it to help people and make my community better. At Green Party Conference, a motion was passed declaring Zionism a form of racism and committing the party to oppose it. I had serious concerns about what this could mean for Jewish members. Being Jewish does not make someone a Zionist. Jewish people hold many different views on Israel and Zionism. An amendment was put forward saying members should not be pressured or disciplined simply because they attend or are connected to Jewish institutions such as synagogues or community centres. It also sought to ensure Jewish members weren't punished for views that wouldn't see non-Jewish members punished. I voted for it. It was rejected. I then voted against the final motion. I saw Jewish members in tears afterwards. I won't forget that. I came back to Waterloo knowing I couldn't look residents in the face and defend something I believe is wrong. I will always stand up for Palestinian freedom and speak out against the actions of the Israeli Government. But I can do that while standing with our Jewish community against antisemitism. We must be able to do both. I fear the Green Party is heading to a very dark place. I cannot follow it there. If that means my political career ends at 23, so be it. I'm not leaving Waterloo. I'll still be here, taking up your casework, fighting your corner and doing everything I can for the community I love.

There will be Green members and leaders who are sickened by today’s motion. They will be appalled at the message their party has just sent to Jewish people. But it’s not enough to frame this motion as unhelpful to party unity. It’s not enough to say this doesn’t help move the argument forward. It’s not even enough to state that you support a two state solution. Even though all of those things are right, there’s something deeper at the heart of this motion (and the amendments that fell) - the party is now explicit: only one people is not entitled to self determination: Jewish people. They should send a different message to the Jewish community. One that recognises the hurt their party will have caused today. And whatever sincerely and deeply held objections they have to the Israeli Government, they should be clear that Zionism is not racism. That would be a start.

Being a member of virtually any synagogue in the UK as a Jew is now racist behaviour according to Green Party policy. This is horrifying and must be condemned across politics.

there is a wonderful example of total Green confusion about Zionism on the News Agents podcast today. One of the sponsors of the Zionism is racism motion is a former far right activist, convert to Islam, who believes in the right of Israel to exist, but that Zionism is racism.

Today’s vote at the Green Party Conference crosses a line and is rightly being condemned across the political spectrum. Labour will continue working to ensure Jewish communities are safe and have their rights upheld. We must rid our society of the scourge of antisemitism.

Sad to see the traditional Green Party move to the extremes over the last year. This motion is hugely problematic, particularly in its rejection of protections for Jewish people. The two-state solution is the only viable opportunity for peace - we should all work for that.
BREAKING The Green Party has declared that “Zionism is racism”, after a motion was passed by members at its conference against the wishes of several MPs The move means that Zionism, the movement that led to the creation of Israel as a Jewish state, will be “treated as any other form of racism” by the party 1,022 people voted for the motion while 813 who voted against it Zack Polanski, did not cast a vote. A Green Party spokesman said this was because he was on the campaign trail for the Holborn & St Pancras by-election, in which he is standing Polanski has previously said that Zionism is a form of racism but he had not said whether he would support the motion thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

BREAKING: Bridget Phillipson responds on behalf of Labour to the racist and antisemitic motion today. It’s strong and she doesn’t mince her words to be fair. Bridget Phillipson MP, Chair of the Labour Party, and Minister for Women and Equalities, responds to the Green Party’s vote on Zionism at the Green Party Conference, said:   “It is shameful to vote against a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine and to condemn the vast majority of British Jews and Jews around the world as racist for supporting Israel’s right to exist. It is fundamentally wrong and the leadership of the Green Party must make clear that this will not be their position moving forwards.   “The Labour Party has always been clear that criticism of the policies of the Israeli Government is not antisemitic, and the Labour government has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. But today’s vote at the Green Party Conference crosses a line and should be condemned across the political spectrum.   “This vote underlines how important it was that we changed the Labour Party from top to bottom and ripped out the scourge of antisemitism from within the party.    "The Labour Party and the Labour Government will continue working every day to ensure our Jewish communities are safe, feel safe and have their rights upheld, as well as making sure we rid our society of antisemitism once and for all.”
