through narrows
and quiet canals
of memory
we navigate the present
carrying the #illusion
of a completed garden
one clear look
and the gate opens
onto unfinished ground
the harbours recede
we offer our bodies
to the passage
somewhere inland
a stranger wakes
remembering our crossing
all morning
he finds sand
in the pockets of his coat
the sea
has never felt
so close

Gruesome loneliness met us at every turn. A colorless labyrinth of stone felt intimidating. I was not certain it was entirely lifeless, yet it seemed a hopelessly abandoned place that no one would call home. Even the rare vegetation was repulsive. One plant grew low and grey, baggy, covered in a thin layer that resembled spider web. It looked and smelled like an old refuse sack. Another grew atop the walls, also grey, its tentacles spreading like spider legs. Its center was paler, the color of sickness, resembling a cocoon that might house something ghoulish.

We've been hearing multiple reports that there is a 'd' in 'handkerchief.'
We're monitoring the situation.

Mid-Journey——
past midnight,
the train carried the traveler
through provinces of rain.
Across the aisle,
an empty seat kept its silence.
But in the dark window,
a phantasm sat there——
a figure folded in lamplight,
tilting their head
in that old, familiar way,
as though their last goodbye
were still waiting to be spoken.
The traveler turned.
The seat was bare.
Turned back——
and there was that face again,
clearer now than memory,
so close the glass seemed
thinner than time.
Outside, signal lights passed
like wounded stars.
Then the train entered a tunnel.
When it emerged,
the window held only night.
Yet on the seat opposite
lay an old ticket,
its destination worn away.
The traveler picked it up
and said nothing.
At last, the first light
touched the window.
Across the aisle,
the empty seat
traveled on toward morning.

Mid-Journey——The Words in the Margin
The town hall clock read five seventeen.
At the school gate, one language
was painted in blue.
At the courthouse, the same language
was carved into stone.
Down a narrow lane, an old woman
mended a child's coat.
Beside her, a boy counted stitches
in words absent from every sign.
Footsteps sounded outside.
The boy lowered his voice.
The needle went on.
The traveler opened his notebook
and wrote: a different culture.
"What is your language called?"
he asked the woman.
"The one my mother spoke
when she called me home from the rain."
She glanced at his open page.
"And what words did your mother use
to call you home?"
He saw the doorstep of his childhood,
rainwater shining on the stones,
and heard his mother's voice
calling him in before dark.
He looked at the words in his notebook.
Beside them, in the margin, he wrote:
Different from what?
The school gate kept its blue letters.
The courthouse kept its stone.
Only after the footsteps faded
did the boy begin counting again.
