My wife’s powerful article in today’s Indian Express. “His words are free, my son is not” Six years of incarceration without trial is not justice—it is discrimination, You may imprison a person, but you cannot imprison his words, silence his ideas, or put his thoughts behind bars

“The penance that lacerates itself”
In a bizarre statement after being convicted in the 2013 rape case, former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal compared himself to jailed activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, claiming he too was a "political victim." "Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are in jail. I'm also one of them," Tejpal said while seeking leniency in sentencing after the Bombay High Court overturned his acquittal and convicted him. The remarks have triggered sharp reactions, with many questioning Tejpal's attempt to equate his conviction in a rape case with the incarceration of political activists. Watch this report for the full story and Tejpal's complete statement.

Some of this is not a surprise. Military weapons have been creeping into Indian police forces -- see this: thepolisproject.com/read/ind…. And yet, to see them used on students (after unarmed protesters in Ladakh two years ago) is staggering all the same. cc: @suchitrav, @svaradarajan
#Siwan #Bihar #BiharBandh #StudentProtest #StonePelting #Police #BreakingNews #BiharNews @RJDforIndia @INCIndia @INCBihar @yadavtejashwi @jansuraajonline

Four days after students across Bihar filled the streets over a leaked medical-entrance exam, as part of the countrywide wave of protests tied to the Coakroach Janta Party (CJP) -led student agitation in Delhi, police officers in Patna named 285 people in cases registered at three stations: Kotwali, Gandhi Maidan and the Secretariat and, alongside them, opened 24 cases against about 5,000 unnamed people they could not identify. thepolisproject.com/read/cen…

The fundamental demand was the complete withdrawal of all cases against the protesters. Yet, disturbing reports continue to emerge from Assam, West Bengal, and particularly Patna where detentions and incidents of police firing have been reported. Who is directing the police? Is it the Home Minister? If the understanding was to withdraw all cases, it makes little sense for authorities to continue registering FIRs while simultaneously dismissing protesters as so-called 'anti-social elements.' Many of these cases, in fact, have been filed against Muslim students.
