Just last week, a nurse working at IGMH told me that she was walking home. Near a pharmacy (adjacent to IGMH), she met an old lady (a stranger). Upon seeing her, this old lady spoke with sadness: "Kokko, mihaaru 1 mas vejje dhahththa mi beys (for arthritics) nulibigen ulheythaa..." Then the old lady burst into tears and said, "I have to endure this pain every day."

The recent trajectory of the MDP is cause for serious concern. We once championed openness, pluralism, and democratic reform. Now we appear increasingly willing to embrace xenophobic and ultra nationalistic rhetoric. This is a departure from the founding ideals that defined the MDP’s political identity and inspired many of its earliest supporters.
A growing number within the party seem convinced that electoral success depends on manufacturing populist outrage and mobilising public sentiment through fear and division. Yet this strategy risks undermining the very constituency that has historically sustained the MDP. Voters who are multicultural, liberal, and open minded. Alienating this core base in pursuit of short term political gains is not only misguided but strategically self defeating.
It is worth recalling the campaign built around the slogan Birakaa Nulaa Majaa Kurun. Far from diminishing support, that message broadened the party’s appeal, attracting an estimated twenty thousand additional votes without significantly repelling others. By contrast, invoking religion as a political tool and promoting unfounded narratives, such as the claim that “Zionists are taking over the country”, does nothing to strengthen the party’s credibility. Such rhetoric is not only baseless; it corrodes public discourse and diminishes the seriousness of national politics.
The MDP stands at a crossroads. If it continues down this path, it risks eroding its identity and forfeiting the values that once distinguished it. It is my hope that principled members will intervene to prevent the party from embracing a self destructive course. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold integrity in our politics.

Replying to @MohamedNasheed
Further, the opposition to this project is not purely on anti-zionist sentiments.
Core values of MDP also espouse equal access to resources. This project is likely to further the existing divide. Selling off our means of production to corporations is giving in to neo-imperialism

Abu Dhabi's Grip on the Maldives: Mohamed Alabbar and the 99-Year Deal to Control Ras Malé's Land
Confidential sources have revealed to Dark Box that the UAE is seeking to expand its economic influence in the Maldives through billionaire Mohamed Alabbar and his company, Eagle Hills. Under the proposed deal, the Abu Dhabi-based developer would secure development rights over approximately 500 hectares, nearly half of the Ras Malé project originally intended to address the country's housing crisis, for 99 years, without an upfront acquisition fee or conventional rent.
Suspicions are mounting over the absence of a competitive tender or independent land valuation, alongside conflicting project estimates ranging from $12 billion to $20 billion. The government is expected to receive 10% of project revenue, while the financing costs of 5,000 housing units would be recovered from its share. The lack of transparency deepened on October 26, 2026, when Parliament rejected a proposal to disclose the agreement by 45 votes to 10.
Former Maldivian Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed warned against Alabbar's alleged attempts to influence public opinion, declaring that the Maldives' sovereignty and national identity are not for sale. Eagle Hills' controversial involvement in Serbia's Belgrade Waterfront project has further intensified concerns about exceptional privileges and long-term concessions benefiting the developer.
At the heart of the controversy lies a fundamental question: Will land reclaimed to house Maldivian citizens be transformed into a lucrative Emirati real estate empire generating profits for decades, while the decisive terms of the agreement remain hidden from public scrutiny?

AN AWARD-WINNING IRANIAN SHORT FILM THAT CHOKED ME UP ❤️
An elderly man notices a couple arguing in traffic, while their little daughter silently watches everything from the back seat. Seeing the little girl caught in the middle of their argument, he and his wife decide to do something to remind the family of the love they seem to have forgotten. Through a simple gesture involving flowers, they send them a heartfelt message.
But the ending reveals something truly heartbreaking...
The elderly man was never actually accompanied by his wife. He visits her grave every Thursday. The empty seat beside him holds nothing but memories of the woman he loved. The flowers he had originally brought for her were given to the arguing family instead, hoping to remind them of the love they still have.
And the little girl’s response with a flower of her own makes the moment even more emotional.
A man who can no longer share his love with the person he lost, yet still finds a way to bring a little love back into someone else’s life. 🫰

Go back to Adeeb. Look at what we allowed to happen.
2014. Yameen creates the SEZ Board of Investments. Ahmed Adeeb chairs it. Mohamed Saeed is his deputy.
Around that time, Adeeb is texting MMPRC boss Abdulla Ziyath about island deals.
“We will make zone deals not only islands hehe.”
Ziyath replies: “The untouchables.”
Their actual messages.
And while all this was happening, politicians from BOTH sides were approaching Adeeb.
The Adeeb Files contain 81,167 messages. Investigative journalists identified at least 18 MPs involved in exchanges about money, jobs or favours.
PPM politicians. MDP politicians.
One opposition MP was asking Adeeb for loans while discussing his own party's deliberations over appointing a Prosecutor General.
These were the people supposed to hold the government accountable.
2015. Adeeb falls. Saeed takes over the SEZ Board. Muizzu joins it.
The system carries on.
Now look at Noomadi.
Nasheed's government signs the first agreement in 2011. Another follows under Waheed in 2013.
Yameen's government terminates the contracts while Muizzu is housing minister.
Noomadi demands $155 million.
Solih's government eventually settles for $55 MILLION.
Muizzu is accused of giving false testimony in the arbitration. He's later acquitted after the prosecution fails to prove its case.
Different governments. Different decisions. One enormous bill.
And in November 2023, days before leaving office, Solih pardons Adeeb and Ziyath. The two men convicted over the MMPRC scandal.
Now back to Saeed and Muizzu.
2025. The SEZ law is amended to accommodate luxury townships.
Who signs the $790 million Ayla investment agreement?
Mohamed Saeed.
Who designates it a special economic zone?
President Mohamed Muizzu.
The same two men who served on Adeeb's SEZ Board a decade earlier.
And now Ras Malé. 500 hectares. 8,800 planned properties. Another enormous development. Another agreement whose full terms remain hidden.
I'm not claiming Ayla or Ras Malé is another MMPRC scandal. They are different projects, and Ras Malé is being pursued under a different proposed law.
But I find it extraordinary that we went through one of the biggest corruption scandals in our history, saw the messages, the convictions, the pardons, and somehow ended up right back here, unable to examine the agreements being made over our land.
Saeed and Muizzu aren't newcomers to this system. They were sitting on the SEZ Board in 2015. They know its history.
And the parties that took turns governing this country know exactly what happened with MMPRC and Noomadi.
So how are we still signing enormous agreements involving public land without publishing the terms?
How is that even acceptable anymore?
Forget what they promise to do after the next election. We've heard enough of those promises.
After everything that happened, I would have thought the absolute minimum we learned was never to let another government make these decisions behind closed doors.

Our incumbent AG literally argued that “ޤަތުލުޢާންމު” is genocide, when genocide in law requires something far more specific than mass killing: intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a protected group. 🤷🏼♂️
So when even laymen can see the distinction, “legal immaturity” starts sounding generous.
And once legal reasoning keeps bending conveniently arnd political needs, ppl will inevitably start asking whether we are looking at incompetence, corruption of judgment, or both.
