“How Muizzu Broke the Economy.”
Nearly three years into President Muizzu’s term, the Maldives is living with two exchange rates. The official one is still MVR 15.42 per dollar. The real one that ordinary people and businesses face is now over MVR 20 and heading toward 21.
The black market is stronger than ever, dollar access for imports, education, medical treatment and online payments has collapsed, and the Rufiyaa has effectively undergone a hidden devaluation.
Muizzu came promising to kill the black market and defend the currency. Instead, the gap between official fiction and economic reality has widened dramatically.
Even as acknowledgment is due for the structural problems and the difficult inheritance from previous administrations, Muizzu’s government has now governed long enough to own the results.
Key failures:
• Continued heavy spending and large infrastructure projects while foreign reserves remain under pressure
• Political appointments that weakened the independence of BML and the Maldives Monetary Authority
• Denial of the crisis (calling BML’s 2024 card restrictions a “financial coup”) & doubling down on imprudent policies
• Prioritising political optics over hard economic decisions
The black market is not the disease, it is the symptom. People and businesses use it because the official system cannot deliver dollars at the promised rate. The public ultimately pays the hidden cost through higher prices and restricted access.
None of the solutions will be painless, they include:
• Exchange rate unification (allowing the Rufiyaa to adjust toward market reality, as Egypt did)
• Creating a legal, transparent commercial forex window for businesses and individuals alongside protected access for essential imports
• Real fiscal austerity — actual cuts in government spending, reviewing mega projects, reducing political appointments and controlling money supply
• Restoring independence of BML and the MMA
• In extreme cases, even full dollarisation (though this carries huge risks for a tourism-dependent economy like Maldives and is not recommended due to loss of state autonomy)

It is an absolute miracle if you take part in Maldivian politics and manage to "retire" from it with your morality and ethical standards intact.
I am just absolutely appalled at the conversation I just had with an "ex"-politician.
They will comply.
MATI’s balls have shriveled since they confronted Nasheed over his fiscal policies.
No one asked for this 🙄

Wasn’t he the one who preached about abolishing this system and bringing changes but has done absolutely nothing but collecting paycheck after paycheck ever since? 🤡

where is it written that an MP is expected to spend their own money on constituents or hand out cash whenever someone calls saying they’re broke?
this is a harmful culture, and by feeding into it, you're only reinforcing dependency. nobody forced you to do this. or did they?

How do we get out of this circular trap? He’s describing the system accurately.
How do we fix it?
Currently no single MP would individually vote for a change that would slash their salary to 25k because then they will be 100% sure they won’t get re-elected by the vote buyers.
If they don’t comply, cut them from the party > ok now the seat is empty. Suddenly 85 empty seats. Now nothing happens until a brand new election. Everyone who gets elected does the same thing? What then?
Genuinely just trying to work out a way out of this stupid deadlock we have written ourselves into. Any ideas?

Azaan with his apologist’s take on MP salary hike.
cry me a river.
Well well… @axanner has spoken.
Technically he isn’t wrong here… but my issue is that he lacks the political will to bring the necessary changes. Why? Cuz he bows to Muizzu, and the gang won’t reform the system. Ultimately he chooses not to fight for his people despite knowing what’s right.

What happens to @MMuizzu is that whenever he receives an invitation for a state visit, he gets carried away by his excitement, agreeing to everything and making offers without giving them much thought.
He appears to lack wisdom, experience, and critical thinking. According to some of Muizzu’s former classmates and colleagues, he has an inferiority complex.
There is nothing wrong with maintaining good relationship with Pakistan. However, we must also consider the long-standing rivalry and disputes between India and Pakistan.
We has historically maintained close relations with India, which has consistently provided assistance whenever we have needed it. Essential goods such as Hakuru, hadoo , fiyaa, aluvi, bis, medicine , hila, and hilaveli are imported from India. India has permitted only three or four countries to export certain essential items, and the Maldives has benefited from this arrangement.
We must therefore be careful not to jeopardise our longstanding relationship with India. While strengthening ties with Pakistan may be beneficial, there is no need to deepen military relations to the extent that they create unnecessary tensions with India.
Our foreign policy should be guided by wisdom, strategic thinking, and the long-term interests of the Maldivian people, not by the excitement of making promises during state visits. @HCIMaldives @DrSJaishankar @IruthishamAdam @PakPMO @GovtofPakistan @PakinUSA @min_mohst @abkhaleel @amathyn @em_saeed @MP4Dhiggaru @maumoonagayoom

💔 Today, Friday, we appeal to all kind-hearted people: please don’t abandon our family during these extremely difficult circumstances!
chuffed.org/project/206540-h…
We are 13 people in Gaza, including children and a little baby girl who needs milk and diapers. Prices keep rising mercilessly, and donations barely cover our basic needs. To make matters worse, fees take a large portion of the money we receive, leaving us with even less to support our family. 😭
Every day is a struggle to provide food, milk, diapers, medicine, and other essentials. We are trying our best, but we cannot face all these hardships alone.
🤲 On this blessed Friday, please help us with whatever you can, even a small amount, or quote and share our post so our story can reach compassionate hearts.
There are 13 of us depending on your kindness. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference. Please don’t forget our children and our little baby girl. 🙏💔
