It is an absolute miracle if you take part in Maldivian politics and manage to "retire" from it with your morality and ethical standards intact. I am just absolutely appalled at the conversation I just had with an "ex"-politician.

Wasn’t he the one who preached about abolishing this system and bringing changes but has done absolutely nothing but collecting paycheck after paycheck ever since? 🤡

where is it written that an MP is expected to spend their own money on constituents or hand out cash whenever someone calls saying they’re broke? this is a harmful culture, and by feeding into it, you're only reinforcing dependency. nobody forced you to do this. or did they?

How do we get out of this circular trap? He’s describing the system accurately. How do we fix it? Currently no single MP would individually vote for a change that would slash their salary to 25k because then they will be 100% sure they won’t get re-elected by the vote buyers. If they don’t comply, cut them from the party > ok now the seat is empty. Suddenly 85 empty seats. Now nothing happens until a brand new election. Everyone who gets elected does the same thing? What then? Genuinely just trying to work out a way out of this stupid deadlock we have written ourselves into. Any ideas?

What happens to @MMuizzu is that whenever he receives an invitation for a state visit, he gets carried away by his excitement, agreeing to everything and making offers without giving them much thought. He appears to lack wisdom, experience, and critical thinking. According to some of Muizzu’s former classmates and colleagues, he has an inferiority complex. There is nothing wrong with maintaining good relationship with Pakistan. However, we must also consider the long-standing rivalry and disputes between India and Pakistan. We has historically maintained close relations with India, which has consistently provided assistance whenever we have needed it. Essential goods such as Hakuru, hadoo , fiyaa, aluvi, bis, medicine , hila, and hilaveli are imported from India. India has permitted only three or four countries to export certain essential items, and the Maldives has benefited from this arrangement. We must therefore be careful not to jeopardise our longstanding relationship with India. While strengthening ties with Pakistan may be beneficial, there is no need to deepen military relations to the extent that they create unnecessary tensions with India. Our foreign policy should be guided by wisdom, strategic thinking, and the long-term interests of the Maldivian people, not by the excitement of making promises during state visits. @HCIMaldives @DrSJaishankar @IruthishamAdam @PakPMO @GovtofPakistan @PakinUSA @min_mohst @abkhaleel @amathyn @em_saeed @MP4Dhiggaru @maumoonagayoom

💔 Today, Friday, we appeal to all kind-hearted people: please don’t abandon our family during these extremely difficult circumstances! chuffed.org/project/206540-h… We are 13 people in Gaza, including children and a little baby girl who needs milk and diapers. Prices keep rising mercilessly, and donations barely cover our basic needs. To make matters worse, fees take a large portion of the money we receive, leaving us with even less to support our family. 😭 Every day is a struggle to provide food, milk, diapers, medicine, and other essentials. We are trying our best, but we cannot face all these hardships alone. 🤲 On this blessed Friday, please help us with whatever you can, even a small amount, or quote and share our post so our story can reach compassionate hearts. There are 13 of us depending on your kindness. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference. Please don’t forget our children and our little baby girl. 🙏💔 @hsnyldrm1979 @fawnn404 @ainiladra

I was just shown a chat log in which a MP, while discussing the petition on their special health insurance said: “Alhaalaa eyche noon, bahus ninmaafa dhuvaskolhakun Dhivehin handhaane nuhunaane 😂 “ I cannot speak for every Maldivian, but I will not forget. And I know the people leading this petition will not forget either. You are not dealing with the same kind of public pressure you may have grown accustomed to. We will remember what you said, what you promised, and how you acted. And we will also hold you accountable for every word you uttered. You all claimed you don't want benefits ordinary citizens don't receive. You also claimed this special insurance hardly benefits you. Then giving it up shouldn't be difficult, should it? People are waiting. People are watching. And no, this time, they will not simply forget.

A gentleman just called me and said tonight was the first time in his life he had ever shouted on the street. He said it is raining heavily, and people were walking carefully with umbrellas over their heads when Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem’s official car came speeding down the road with its siren on, splashing water all over everyone. And this happened on the very same day Majlis committee decided to increase his salary from 73,000 to 95,000. Imagine earning more public money while showing so little consideration for the very people who pay your salary.

This cannot be legal. Emoloyers can't just offer rewards to hunt their absconding workers. This is mob rule. If they have an issue with him they have to involve authorities such as @PoliceMv or @ImmigrationMV. Is there nobody with common sense here?

This is the very first tweet by Minister Ihusaan by the X handle that has blocked me and serval others. In ministers on words the handle is “an official Twitter handle for the minister of Homeland Security and Technology” which will be used by him and all future ministers.
This case is not about me or Minister Ihusaan. It is about a fundamental question concerning every Maldivian citizen. On one hand, government officials use their X accounts as official platforms to communicate government policies, decisions and announcements. On the other, they treat those same accounts as private property when it comes to blocking citizens they dislike. Can a public official arbitrarily block citizens from a social media account used for official government communication? Seeking an answer, I approached four institutions: 1. President’s Office: I requested the guidelines, codes of conduct and SOPs governing official social media accounts, including the circumstances under which citizens may be blocked. They replied that these matters were not under their oversight and directed me to individual ministries. 2. Ministry of Homeland Security: I requested the same information. Their response was that the minister could block whoever he wished. They also refused to acknowledge the minister’s account as an official account, maintaining that no one had been blocked from an official account. 3. Human Rights Commission of Maldives: I asked whether such actions infringed upon my constitutional rights. Rather than addressing that fundamental question, they directed me to the Information Commissioner. 4. Principal Secretary to the President on Citizens’ Complaints, Dr Mohamed Mahid Shareef: I requested a review of the matter. I never received a response. From everything I have gathered so far, there appears to be no clearly established SOP, guideline or code of conduct governing how public officials should manage social media accounts used for official communication. And despite approaching four institutions, I still have no answer to the fundamental constitutional question. This is not merely a hypothetical legal issue. Similar disputes have reached courts in other democracies, including the United States, where courts have examined whether blocking citizens from accounts used for official government business violates freedom of expression. I believe Maldivians deserve judicial clarity on this question too. I am therefore looking for a lawyer or legal team willing to help bring this matter before the courts. I cannot afford expensive legal representation, but this case concerns the rights of thousands of citizens, not just mine. I believe we can collectively crowdfund the legal expenses if necessary. This is not about forcing a minister to unblock me. It is about establishing whether public officials can use a platform as an official government communication channel while denying citizens access to it based on personal or political preferences. Public office is not private property. Public accountability should not depend on whether a minister likes you.

Citizens petition to remove MP healthcare, Citizens campaign to abolish MP benefits, Committee response: a 30% raise for the Speaker This must be a form of mockery
🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has approved an increase in the Speaker’s salary from 73,125/- to 95,000/- month. That’s nearly 30% raise. The proposal was submitted by Kelaa MP Abdul Shareef and endorsed by Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh. Dear media, stop using photos of the Parliament Speaker & Prz Muizz to report this news. Instead, show the faces of the MPs who propose, endorse, and vote for such decisions. Let the public see exactly who is making these decisions with taxpayers’ money.

People are slowly waking up to the fact that it's worse for us Maldivians than it was during most of Covid. The reason is Muizzu's corruption. Rasmalé is the manifestation of all this: over 700 million dollars dumped into the ocean while citizens beg for basic medicines.
