You can have a fun lab without sleeping with the fellows in the program you direct!
One of the things that got me about the @DMSabatini story was the allegation that his lab promoted “bro culture.” Not only is being a bro not a crime (no matter what some might have you think) but labs, especially ones that operate at such a high level, rely on people being motivated, being inspired, and yes, having fun. I loved Sabatini’s response to my question in my interview with him for @PirateWires, on how American science has become corporate and sterile:

You can’t make this up. Minouche Shafik, the former @Columbia president who caved to hostile politicians in a disastrous hearing, called the NYPD onto her own campus, had students arrested by the hundreds, then resigned in disgrace, is now in charge of @LSEnews new forum for “democratic debate.” Will she call the police on the debaters too? lse.ac.uk/news/latest-news-f…

Can’t believe I saw some paleontologists celebrating this yesterday & calling it “great” for business & a growing fossil market — as if we should be happy to see priceless specimens like this be kept away from research & diminished to a house decoration for the super wealthy.
🚨NEW ATROCITY ALERT🚨 Jodi, the large Nanotyrannus - only one of 3 known complete specimens, has just been sold for a new record-breaking 47.3 million USD! Who the hell knows who bought it or if we will ever see it again.

Two million Arabs vote in today’s election in Israel. Very strange Apartheid.

U.S. politicians: “israel is the only democracy in the middle east ♥️” netanyahu’s son: “allowing brown people to vote is an existential threat”

Hard to believe that it's been seven years to the day that a bus fell into a sinkhole in downtown #Pittsburgh. While I couldn't make it down in the morning I did after work, and this image remains one of the wildest I've ever captured in the city.

Today we learned that it was a 28-year-old DOGE operative who gutted USAID, and HR had no record of him working there. Totally normal stuff.

RFK Jr.'s a disgusting racist. We all know that. But as Anti-Arab and Islamophobic hate rises, and as this vile rhetoric puts people in danger, we must all speak out louder than the hate. We will not let these fascists win.
US Secretary of Health Robert F Kennedy Jr. has said that Arabs don’t produce science or literature, or win Nobel prizes. RFK Jr.’s remarks, which were made during a Republican rally, have been widely condemned as factually incorrect and racially biased.

RFKs racist rant against Arabs was despicable. It was personally offensive since Alex Azar and myself —both Arab Americans —were his predecessors. I am proud of my Arab heritage. He is a bigot and a racist.

“We’ve built software to track Wikipedia editors,” says the head of the ADL. We have an investigation publishing soon about pro-Israel manipulation of Wikipedia, and he just blurts it out
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt: "I have 45 people at ADL—full-time analysts—45 full-time intelligence analysts tracking the bad guys across social media, across AI, across video games, podcasts, crypto, you name it." "[We've built] software to track Wikipedia [editors]…"

🔻Almost a year ago I signed a settlement agreement to leave Radboud University in the Netherlands, following ten months in which they harassed me in relation to my speech against the genocide of the Palestinian people. I said I would donate the settlement to causes that further Palestinian liberation. I have now received the money and done so, and want to share the causes in the hope that others donate as well. I gave over half to both The Sameer Project in Gaza (thesameerproject.org/), and Tanseqeye Shaabeye (The Popular Committee) in Lebanon (instagram.com/tanseqeye_shaa…), two on the ground initiatives, run by Palestinians and Lebanese people who refuse to disconnect providing material relief to displaced families from the political project of liberation from Zionism. I donated part to @MomodouTaal and @tjAmandla two wonderful black scholars who are being punished by Cornell University for escaping the US to prevent being kidnapped by ICE over their Palestine activism (chuffed.org/project/200834-s…). Finally, I donated part to activist communities in the Netherlands that are working hard to end Dutch complicity in the Zionist project. I'd like to thank Radboud University for funding these important initiatives. I hope Radboud and all universities do so, so much more to end their complicity with Zionism.
Announcement: following months of attempted repression of speech in relation to Palestine, I have agreed a settlement to leave Radboud University, and will take up a position at a new institution. See my full statement here.

In a new #SciencePolicyArticle, researchers look at Jamaica’s experience with 2025’s Hurricane Melissa as a case study that reveals how extreme weather and disaster spending can trap climate-vulnerable countries in a cycle of recovery borrowing and underinvestment in future climate resilience. Regardless of which war criminal becomes prime minister, Palestinians living under Israeli apartheid will continue to face genocide, land theft, and erasure. We cannot accept lies, excuses, or half-measures from our leaders. We must impose a full arms embargo and sanctions until Palestine is free.

On October 27, 2018, 11 Pittsburghers were senselessly killed in an antisemitic attack while worshipping at the Tree of Life building in Squirrel Hill. We continue to stand with the families, survivors and the Jewish community and are committed to eradicating hate in every form.

“Arabs don’t produce literature” is really something you can only say if you’ve never had a moment’s contact with genuine civilization. A mind totally consumed by television and self-help books.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
