A new era of collaboration between WHO/Europe and EASL has begun!
On 10 June, EASL joined fellow medical specialty associations and the WHO Regional Office for Europe, led by Regional Director Dr Hans Kluge, at UN City in Copenhagen for a high-level strategic dialogue — and signed a joint statement marking a shift towards structured, sustained and strategic partnership.
Aligned with the Second European Programme of Work 2026–2030 (EPW2), the signatories commit to three pillars of action:
🔹 Translating policy into clinical practice — bringing clinical expertise into WHO guidance, care pathways and medical curricula
🔹 Driving joint action on shared priorities — from the growing burden of NCDs and mental health to workforce challenges, climate and the responsible use of AI
🔹 Strengthening health systems and reducing inequalities — leveraging clinical networks to improve access to high-quality care across the Region
For EASL, this builds naturally on our existing collaboration with WHO: the WHO–Imperial College London–EASL Collaborating Centre on Steatotic Liver Disease, follow-up to the WHA79 resolution on SLD, and our work through the European Health Alliance on Alcohol (EHAA) to advance evidence-based alcohol policy. Liver health belongs at the heart of Europe's NCD response — and partnerships like this are how policy becomes practice.
We look forward to the next steps: dedicated mechanisms for joint initiatives, continuous clinician engagement, and a broader regional meeting of medical specialty associations.
Thank you to Dr Kluge and the WHO/Europe team for convening this important dialogue.

Excited to share that the Lancet Commission report is now out in press! Incredibly honored to have contributed to this impressive body of work, and the opportunity to highlight how #AI can help us better address the burden of liver disease @EASLnews

@TheLancet @EASLnews second Liver Commission report is online. What a tremendous team effort. A roadmap for health, far beyond that pertaining to liver disease. thelancet.com/journals/lance…

#Diabetes & #liver disease are 2 sides of the same coin, yet both remain underprioritised in EU health policy. Our President, Francesco Giorgino, joined the launch of the EASL-Lancet Commission 2.0, calling for real political will & coordinated action.

ALT Panel discussion at the EASL–Lancet Commission 2.0 launch event. Five panellists are seated on stage in front of a large screen displaying headshots and names of all seven participants: Shira Zelber-Sagi (EASL), Sabine Kleinert (The Lancet), Tom H. Karlsen (EASL-Lancet Commission/Oslo University Hospital)), Frank Murray (EHAA), Cristina Modoran (DG Sante), Francesco Giorgino (EASD), and Marko Korenjak (ELPA). The EASL and The Lancet logos are visible on the screen. An audience is visible in the foreground.
For me a ‘swan song’ on public health launching next week in Brussels, key point: my main scientific interest - tackling disease causation - warrants also a public health perspective to be effective. Stay tuned. easl.eu/event/liver-commisio…

It is amazing and moving to see the impact of the life of Jaume Bosch praised in multiple obituaries. We all miss him but we were fortunate to enjoy his scientific rigor shaping our growth as investigators. A major career influence thelancet.com/journals/lance…
I share an old picture with great sadness on the passing of a good friend and great mentor - Michael Manns. One of the few true giants. Sitting next to him you felt so proud.

The global burden of liver cancer is increasing. 📈
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for approximately 80% of cases globally.
