Five U.S. banks just announced they're putting deposits onchain:
- Huntington Bancshares
- Old National Bancorp
- First Horizon
- M&T Bank
- KeyCorp
They're all piloting the Cari Network - a tokenized deposit platform built on ZKsync's Prividium.
Not a selection of crypto startups. Not a DeFi protocol. Five regulated U.S. banks.
Here's what makes this different from every other blockchain-bank press release:
Tokenized deposits aren't stablecoins. They're actual bank deposits represented onchain. Your money stays insured. It stays inside the regulatory perimeter.
The bank doesn't change - but the rails do.
This is banks rebuilding their plumbing.
Why Prividium specifically?
ZKsync's Prividium is a privacy-preserving layer built for institutions.
Transactions are verified without exposing the underlying data. Regulators can still audit. Competitors can't see your positions. It's the piece that makes banks actually willing to show up.
Here's what this actually changes:
- Settlement that used to take days can happen in seconds - 24/7, including weekends and bank holidays.
- Bank-to-bank transfers become programmable. Smart contracts can move money automatically when conditions are met, no human approval required.
- Five regional banks means this isn't a one-off experiment. It's a coordinated network from day one.
The banks involved aren't giants. Huntington, M&T, KeyCorp - these are mid-tier regional banks with customers in the single digit millions.
But if this works, the big ones will be watching very closely.

Today was beautiful. It completely surpassed my expectations.
~4 years ago, we started @utdtblockchain, driven by the desire to learn and teach what we weren’t getting at university.
Univs play a crucial role in curating content and creating sparks. The club brings students and grads together to fuel that energy and create opportunities to nurture that.
Now fresh blood is running the club: @luzalbaposse @benzagon @patojperalta.
I feel proud of them.
Hopefully, they’ll be able to pass the baton and convince others to take over leadership of the club.
By then, blockchain will be far more mainstream and probably part of every university curriculum.
Big kudos to @SEEDLatam & @NodoSerrano for all the behind-the-scenes work that made this possible ❤️

For people that don't understand why this @zksync breakthrough is a huge deal:
Right now for Ethereum (or any L1), every single validator in the network needs to execute every single transaction in each block that comes in to verify its validity. This means there's a lot of duplicate work spent on the same exact computation.
With ZK proofs, you can instead have a a single block proposer create a proof that the next block is valid. Each validator in the network then only needs to verify the proof rather than re-execute every single transaction in the block. Verifying a zk proof is MUCH more efficient than re-running the block against the current state of the chain.
This enables Ethereum to then have much higher gas limits per block because validators are now much more efficient in verifying blocks. The same hardware can now verify much larger blocks with the same amount of computational power.
With the latest @zksync changes, they are now able to prove an entire Ethereum block with consumer grade hardware. Previously, creating a zk proof for an Ethereum block would take large amounts of computation and time - now it's a mere fraction of what was possible previously.

The @zksync Airbender team pulled off something insane ahead of tomorrow's ethproofs.day demo. Mainnet proofs on two gaming GPUs. One box, ~1kW—basically a toaster.
