this was years in the making, but i didn't start writing it until a few months ago. world-building & outlining future installments stalled me, but the 1st story in the series is finally finished

Nebraska voters banned sports gambling. Interesting.
The other states legalized it without referendums. It was done through the politicians. Politicians wanted tax revenue to fund their bloated budget. They dont care.
Maybe states should be putting sports gambling on the statewide referendums so actual citizens can vote for it
Nebraska voters rejected a push backed by major sportsbooks to amend the state constitution to allow online sports wagering.
Online sportsbooks contributed all of the $21.3M donated to the group pushing the measure. DraftKings $10.4M, FanDuel $9.5M +others

with this election result I get that people are wary of the woke resurgence. lemme offer a particular perspective from someone who has played on both sides of the woke/antiwoke tennis match
I was hardcore woke for some years, vocal male feminist, pro-palestine activist, co-op founder, NGO consultant, the whole nine yards
then I realised that my wokeness was just re-enacting the religious fundamentalism of my upbringing, the same conformist behaviours dressed up with new language (and missing crucial virtues like forgiveness & grace)
I left the church of social justice around 2018, before woke peaked
now I have my own anti-woke allergies & defensiveness. can’t fucking stand it when strangers try to hold me to account for not following some new rules they invented last week. can’t fucking stand the thoughtpolice making us all dumber by the minute. these days pluralism is my most important political value
recently I noticed something, when I have my reservations and fears about some people from the left: sometimes I have to work with an outspoken feminist, or an anti-racism trainer, or a noted labor rights spokesperson or whatever, and I get wary, like are these people going to try to badger me into submission? are they going to make me play the privilege olympics before I get the right to speak??
and in the past year or two, everytime I have been wary about working with one of these people, I notice I am pleasantly surprised. in my corner of the world at least, it’s like the most rabid undignified socially brutal activists have been humbled. they’ve learned to turn down the intensity. subconsciously at least, they can feel that their ideology has great gaping cracks in it. so their more circumspect about how they share their perspective
I guess I want to suggest that the culture war is over. it’s just not evenly distributed yet

I do actually believe this. People starting realizing they could ask more from their elected officials and expect it. He truly brewed hope amongst the working class.
The entire Democratic Party owes a massive debt of gratitude to Zohran Mamdani.
Before his rapid rise, the party was largely rudderless, suffering from a loss of direction, momentum, and self-confidence. By drifting away from the working class, the party naturally saw voters walk away in response.
Mamdani single-handedly corrected the course, bringing vital energy, ideological clarity, and an authentic connection back to the very people who had been left behind.
Without his influence, the party’s current standing would look very different.

man tells me about a german film he saw: a german man who plays the accordion gets really into cajun music, and is sent to america. when i noted this sounds hilarious he says it’s actually a profoundly sad film. germans are incredible. imagine a mindset where that is not a comedy

I kinda like how committing to a choice collapses all other possibilities and we can just focus on what is in front of us !

making excuses for my conduct rn but I do think it’s above standard libbing out when Kansas goes blue for the first time since the 1930s, Texas is bluer than Mass, and pritzker got a county that hasnt gone blue since literally slavery was still legal. like this is Different

Mamdani is like your first legitimately nice boyfriend, and made the rest of your friend group say “maybe I don’t have to date losers anymore either”.

Saying the quiet part out loud: Breweries, this isn’t the market to open multiple locations. We keep watching expansion turn into closing every door. The beer industry is at a slow simmer. Focus on keeping one location strong before stretching yourself into three.

One of my most insane ideas which feels far less wild in 2026 is that the army core of engineers should build a US high speed rail network.

It's crazy that the amount of money spent during election cycles could literally fix most of the fucking problems politicians campaign on.

The only thing that would sway my vote this election is six text messages from an unidentified number during my work day.

October is for 80s, blood and guts, and schlock movies. November is for dark, ominous, psychological gothic stuff. December is, too. The Victorians understood this, they made ghost stories a key part of Christmas. These dying months are great for the macabre.

I need people understand that understaffing isn't a bug of where you work, or your manager being a dick, but a feature of a system constantly trying to minimize its biggest cost (labor). Every place I've ever worked it's presented as a perpetually temporary problem. It isn't.
