What does it take to ensure that political power changes hands peacefully and effectively? A peaceful transfer of executive power is fundamental to resilient democracy. But respecting an election result is only part of the process. Transitions between administrations involve complex decisions and preparations before, during and after power formally changes hands. On 22 October, our Coalition Partner @NDI will explore this often-overlooked dimension of democratic resilience during “Handing Over Power: How Laws Shape Effective Executive Transitions.” The webinar will examine how legal frameworks can bring greater clarity, predictability and accountability to transfers of power, particularly at a time when long-standing democratic conventions and practices face growing pressure. Drawing on comparative transition frameworks from around the world, the discussion will consider what works, where challenges remain and how stronger frameworks can help ensure that governments continue delivering for citizens throughout political transitions.
