Goldman Sachs: "Early Signs of a Tougher Labor Market for Workers Displaced from AI-Exposed Jobs"
- We find that workers displaced from AI-exposed jobs face more difficult transitions back into employment than other displaced workers.
- They take about a month longer to find new jobs and are roughly 10pp more likely to remain unemployed a year after displacement—effects comparable in magnitude to those seen in earlier waves of technological change.
- As in those earlier episodes, we find early signs that younger workers, who are likely more exposed to AI-driven displacement, are navigating this transition better.
-They are returning to full-time employment faster and cycling through fewer temporary jobs along the way.
The AI takes over managerial functions with the end game being that humans end up as slaves to AI rather than the opposite.
This is such a bleak story about what it's like to try to land a job right now. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

The tea leaves say the Nationalist Spring/Summer is turning to autumn. Behind the bombast of Brexit, Bolsonaro, Bannon and Orban was just unreconstructed Chicago School economics (at best) and Borgias style graft (at worst). A decade on, few populists delivered much of anything to improve the lives of citizens, and voters are starting to notice.
The fatalistic assumption that autocracy in the world is rising and democracy is declining was challenged forcefully in three different countries this past weekend.
It's a moment worth celebrating.

Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible.
This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

An internet where every company has to pay big bucks to Anthropic and OpenAI every month just to avoid destruction by ever-present swarms of rogue AI agents is not nearly as economically valuable as the free internet we've enjoyed up to now.
The proliferation of AI cyberattacks may signal the end of the internet as a public good. We may only be able to use it in the future if everyone shells out big bucks for private security. That will reduce the internet's economic value.

We’re WRONG About Ultra-Processed Foods 🧵
1/5) A new study in Nature Metabolism compared two meals matched for Calories, carbs, fat, and protein.
The key difference? One was meal with ultra-processed.
Researchers measured metabolic and brain responses.
The results are fascinating.

Here is what all fields look like for PhD production based on Survey of Earned Doctorates.
Since 2015 (shaded part), humanities and arts are down, but so are business, education, social sciences (non-psych).
On the whole, PhD production continues to rise.
The number of people writing dissertations in the humanities has collapses, now the same thing is happening in the social sciences.
I'd wager that we will see a similar trend in psychology and other fields before long. Cuts in funding, the tight academic job market, and AI are rapidly changing the university and cratering graduate programs.

Kaiser is cutting 49 radiologic technologist roles in Northern California, including mammographers, sonographers, and CT and MRI techs, effective Dec 12.
First it was the admin layer. Now it's the imaging room.
These layoffs come on top of 161 permanent California cuts already in state layoff filings.
In March I said Kaiser was shifting from people-driven to system-controlled operations. This is what that looks like when it reaches clinical work.
Watch for more small filings, not one big headline.
Kaiser Permanente workforce changes are coming. Healthcare is shifting from people-driven operations to system-controlled operations.
December: exits began
January: exits accelerated
February: inflection period
March: hiring flips
I expect the layoffs and exits to be across California, Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, and the Mid-Atlantic.
Not one headline cut either... but distributed reductions over the next 1–2 quarters.
It looks like 2-5K?
Admin, HR, Mid-layer.
Margin compression is real.
