📹 Marry Mubaiwa’s trial on charges of attempting to murder her ex-husband, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, has collapsed at the Harare Magistrates Court after the magistrate cited the lengthy period the case had taken to conclude. “We won. Ms B [lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa] has done a lot of work. She’s done very well. It’s been unfair, but today we got justice. I’m so proud of her,” she said.

The Zanu-PF extra-ordinary politburo meeting that was supposed to discuss changes to the Zanu-PF constitution to align it with the mutilated national constitution was abandoned this afternoon after Vice President and 2nd Secretary of Zanu-PF, Rtd General Constantino Chiwenga, declared that the changes were illegal since they were based on provisions from an illegally changed national constitution. VP Chiwenga, sources say, demanded to see the draft changes that party SG Advocate Mudenda had before President Mnangagwa joined the meeting. In the presence of all other Politiburo members including First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, VP Chiwenga told Mudenda that he (Chiwenga) was not going to allow ED and his cronies to illegally change the party constitution in the way they did the national constitution. Chiwenga insisted that the changes to the national constitution did not come from the people. When Ziyambi Ziyambi tried to argue that the changes to the national constitution came from Zanu-PF conference resolutions, Chiwenga demanded to see the 21 Zanu-PF resolutions which gave birth to the 21 changes that CAB3 brought to the country's constitution. Chiwenga demanded that Mudenda goes to ED and tell him that Chiwenga had said the changes are not going to be discussed. It is said Mudenda went to ED's office at the Zanu-PF headquarters, the venue for the politburo meeting, and Mnangagwa then called the meeting to be abandoned. The temperature is rising in the ruling party. We can only observe!

If this is a small part of the 54 properties that Collins Mnangagwa’s concubine got from the President's son, how much more are the President's children and their wives and concubines looting, considering the President has more than 44 children? By the time ED and his family leave power, Zimbabwe will be a shell. Tinenge tangove nedemhe, nyika pasisina.

Really sad to hear of the passing on of Elliot Pfebve, who has been fighting bowel and liver cancer since 2023. He had also set up a cancer awareness foundation following his diagnosis, to support black and ethnic minority communities in the West Midlands with information about the disease. Elliot and I worked together at Coventry University for about four years, where he was a lecturer. I was in the Press Office. At one point we did get to work directly with each other when I led a campaign promoting the university’s apprenticeships, which included a course that Elliot led. He was an active member of the local Labour Party in the West Midlands, where he championed diversity and inclusion. He actually ran for a council seat in his area. Pfebve’s family suffered a great deal during the early 2000s when he contested the Bindura by-election following the death in a car accident of incumbent MP and Zanu-PF’s political commissar, Border Gezi. The by-election pitted Pfebve against Zanu-PF’s Elliot Manyika. In the media, it was dubbed as “The battle of the two Elliots”. The lead-up to the by-election was marked by a brutal campaign of state-sponsored political violence. The most high-profile atrocity occurred when Matthew Pfebve, Elliot’s elder brother, was assassinated by ZANU-PF supporters. ZANU-PF militants raided the Pfebve home looking for Elliot Pfebve, but the attackers found and abducted his brother Matthew. They refused to believe he was not Elliot and beat him to death. Elliot Pfebve and human rights groups later stated that the assassination was carried out under the direct orders of ZANU-PF candidate Elliot Manyika. The pre-election atmosphere resembled a national crisis rather than a local poll due to widespread intimidation. This was @ZANUPF_Official at the height of its political vulnerability and paranoia, and their response to the MDC challenge was unleashing gratuitous violence. Apart from killing Matthew Pfebve, Zanu-PF activists also abducted and killed Elliot’s campaign manager, Trymore Midzi. In July 2001, a campaign convoy carrying Elliot Pfebve and MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai was ambushed by a mob of over 100 ZANU-PF youths. The vehicles were stoned and torched, though the leadership narrowly escaped unharmed. Elliot lost a lot in that by-election. His brother and his friend and campaign manager killed, and family homes and businesses burned to the ground. Even the homes of opposition supporters were torched during this campaign of terror. It was after all this that Elliot decided to run for his life and relocate to the UK. Rest in peace, Comrade. You fought the good fight! Your legacy lives on in the generations of students from around the world that you trained and mentored; you gave your Mash Central community courage to stand up to tyranny when the cost of doing so was too dear to pay, and in your local West Midlands community, you’ve raised awareness of cancer among ethnic minority communities who often lack support when faced with such life-impacting diagnoses!

Is it removal from office or re-assignment? Are we facing another high level breach of the constitution? The case of the @zhrc365 Chairperson Jessie Majome. I am lately increasingly getting concerned whether the President Mnangagwa is getting correct legal advice or not. When a president makes errors of process in important decisions, it creates public confidence and trust issues that are wholly avoidable. Jessie Majome is a Chairperson of an independent Commission in terms of our constitution, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission. The President by notice purports to re-assign her from being the Chairperson of an Independent Commission to a junior position in the Public Service Commission. The truth is that Jessie Majome has been removed from office as Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, an independent Constitutional Commission. The question of how a commissioner of an independent Commission may be removed from office is covered under section 237 of the Constitution. It reads that a member of an independent commission may be removed from office “only on the ground”that the member is unable to perform his/her functions because of physical or mental incapacity or is grossly incompetent or is guilty of gross misconduct or has become ineligible for appointment. It is impirtant to note that no such allegation has been made against Chairperson Jessie Majome. The constitution further provides that “The process of removal of a judge from office applies to removal from office of a member of an independent Commission” So the question that begs an answer is how the President was not advised that the removal of Commissioner Jessie Majome as a Commissioner let alone Chairperson of the independent Commission needed compliance with section 237 of the constitution. Now there we are, we have another unnecessary controversy in our country that shows a lack of desire to comply with the constitution at the highest levels of governmental authority. The majority of people will see this for what it is, a removal from office as Chair of an Independent Constitutional Commission. The disguise to use the word re-assign will not fool anyone.

With one of the most tenacious journalists I have ever known, Violet Gonda, in Johannesburg, where we are attending a media round table. I have known her for 26 years. We first met at City University after she enrolled for a Master of Arts degree in International Journalism a year after I graduated from the same programme. She has previously had her citizenship stripped, only for it to be reinstated after 20 years, all because the regime did not like her kind of journalism, robust and unflinching, holding power to account without fear. African dictatorships often commit some of the most cruel acts against their own people, punishing truth and rewarding silence.

It’s interesting to observe the deafening silence by some leaders of the opposition movement on @ProfMadhuku’s violent assault! I thought as champions of democracy and defenders of the basic human rights of Zimbabweans, this prominent violation of a fellow political leader and foremost expert in the very business of the Constitution that we’re all as a nation currently fixated with, you would stand on business and not only express human solidarity, but signal the values and ideals you hold that underpin your cause for a free, democratic Zimbabwe! But alas, expecting basic humanity from people absorbed with their own ambitions seems an expectation too much and too far to attain! Kutokundwawo hunhu naJonso!
