The benefits bill is so high because we use it to fund low wages by employers and high rent by landlords.
My government will get people back to work. No more tinkering. Real reform to give people their futures back, cut the benefits bill, and fire up the economy.

The thing about "the UK’s tax burden is now at a record high", is that this is also true for almost all countries 📈

Deaths from paracetamol overdoses fell by 43% in England and Wales in the 11 years after the law on pack sizes was changed
It's only recently dawned on me how mental it is this country has extreme safetyism around stuff like buying paracetamol, combined with a range of hugely unsafe elephants in the room like zombie knife rampages which are treated as inevitable and unavoidable.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Paracetamol overdose deaths were 43% lower than the predicted figures, not the actual deaths before the legislation. These predictions showed deaths rising every year from 1998 to 2009. Paracetamol overdoses did not decrease, but the fatality rate was lower. bmj.com/content/346/bm…

It would be fascinating to see historical data for this sort of thing. I strongly suspect this phenomenon of being in a tiny unrepresentative minority but believing most people agree with you (and therefore feeling empowered to act) is a social media era phenomenon.
7% of people say they support those causing unrest at protests. 85% oppose (75% strongly) But 62% of the 7% who support violence think most people in Britain do too: Only 1/4 of pro-violence group think they don't (Much lower among "support protest" than "support unrest")

The extreme Right are very loud rather than very popular. But as long as the media mistake loudness for popularity, the extreme Right will keep getting more airtime than their rivals. That’s not to underestimate the very real frustrations with politics that many of their supporters feel, but it does give us the first very real sign that the march of the Far Right is not as relentless and unstoppable as they would browbeat us into believing. It’ll be hard work and demand full attention, but they CAN be stopped. And that gives me hope.
So, in the end, both France and Britain voted against the far-right. Doesn't mean the threat is gone, but pay attention to the center, center left, green and center right voters who are still the majority in Europe, everywhere except Hungary.

It took them ONE DAY. We said, repeatedly, that Labour’s caution on the way to power was necessary to even start actually doing good. What is it about our professional political commentators that prevents them understanding politics?
