A03 being down has made me realise no one knows anything about copyright law. Yes they can sue you & cease & desist you. For the love of god people

AO3 goes down for a month due to a security incident (THEIR WORDS) and now we’ve got a random website asking for your ao3 email? Guys. Let’s use that one collective brain cell to connect the dots PLEASE.

So just a heads up on this: There are a number of LLCs that were registered yesterday and all mysteriously scraping and creating similar sites that all have the same cache of our materials. The newest offender has yet to "load in batches", meaning they are actively making more.

So ao3 [dot] life is a website whose domain was JUST registered today, with millions (?) of fics as audiobooks within their database. Honestly this is highly suspicious — DO NOT email this site for taking your fics down, they have no business knowing that kind of information.

for anyone struggling with the whole “fanfic writers don’t own their works” concept, i strongly suggest reading this legal article, which explores the blurred lines between copyright infringement, derivative works, and the rights fanfiction writers may hold over their own original contributions.
there is a fundamental difference between owning the intellectual property your work is based on and holding rights to the original writing you’ve created.
fanfiction writers do not own the characters or worlds they borrow, but that does not automatically mean their own creative contributions are devoid of copyright protection.
the distinction matters.

maybe we ARE in a literacy crisis if 125k people don't know the difference between “download for personal use” and “reupload to external websites without consent”

not gonna spread rumors but I won’t be surprised if it turns out the ao3 knockoff site, that monetizes fanfics without writers’ knowledge, is behind ao3 security attack. according to some writers, the site has fics that were deleted 10 years ago and fics that are in their DRAFTS

I’m genuinely tweaking rn
Fanfic authors, please be aware there is a website 👉 ao3.life that is scraping fics from Ao3 and turning them into Ai audiobooks and selling them for profit
They have an option to have your fics taken down but from what I’m seeing you have to provide personal info to “prove” the fanfics are yours to begin with (giving, phishing scam) and they claim they pay the authors, which is both untrue and ILLEGAL
Nearly all my fanfics are on here I’m genuinely shaking I’m so pissed like what the FUCK is wrong with people 😭😭😭

In light of recent ao3 related events, I have stumbled upon a website that I think authors need to be made aware of.
The website ao3 [DOT] life has been scraping and downloading fics published to ao3 for who knows how long. 🧵
