Not a coincidence that the most romantic scenes in Phantom Thread were filmed in Yorkshire
Replying to @WidescreenWknd
Visual beauty, sublime music and exquisite performances unfold in a film that intertwines romance with psychological drama. Originally filmed in 35mm and shown here on 70mm, Phantom Thread is a magnificent feat from the acclaimed Paul Thomas Anderson. buff.ly/3LN5go3

Patrick Stewart was, like many of the greatest British artists of the 20th Century, a working class boy who became a world-class artist thanks to a public arts education made possible by Post War social democracy. He never forgot it.

Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love begins its theatrical run this week. Here’s my review explicating what makes the film “novelistic” and why this is Lee’s most successful attempt yet to translate his literary sensibility into his cinema: reverseshot.org/reviews/entr…

NEW: Ten years on, Prime Minister @andyburnham tells @campbellclaret & @RoryStewartUK that there was ‘clear’ Russian interference in the Brexit vote. FINALLY after years of cover-ups & denials from the highest levels of the UK govt. That in itself deserves an inquiry. 1/

“That is the melancholy of art. It achieves an unreal reconciliation at the price of real reconciliation. All that art can do is grieve for the sacrifice it makes, which, in its powerlessness, art itself is.” — Adorno, Aesthetic Theory (tr. Hullot-Kentor)

Jacques Rivette on Hiroshima, mon amour (1959): "Hiroshima is a circular film. At the end of the last reel you can easily move back to the first, and so on. Hiroshima is a parenthesis in time. It is a film about reflection, on the past and on the present. Now, in reflection, the passage of time is effaced because it is a parenthesis within duration. And it is within this duration that Hiroshima is inserted. In this sense Resnais is close to a writer like Borges, who has always tried to write stories in such a way that on reaching the last line the reader has to turn back and re-read the story right from the first line to understand what it is about — and so it goes on, relentlessly. With Resnais it is the same notion of the infinitesimal achieved by material means, mirrors face to face, series of labyrinths. It is an idea of the infinite but contained within a very short interval, since ultimately the 'time' of Hiroshima can just as well last twenty-four hours as one second." — Jean Domarchi, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, Jean-Luc Godard, Pierre Kast, Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer: 'Hiroshima, notre amour', Cahiers du Cinéma No. 97 (July 1959), translated by Liz Heron
